- Go means "senses," and svami means "controller"; so one who can control the senses is to be considered a gosvami. Krsna indicates that one who identifies with the illusory material body cannot establish himself in his proper identity as spirit soul
- Go means "senses," and svami means "master." When you are able to control your senses, then you are a gosvami or svami, the same thing. Otherwise, godasa. Dasa means - servant
- Go means "the senses," and svami means "the master." Unless one controls his senses and mind, one cannot become a gosvami
- Go means senses. So unless you become gosvami, your life is spoiled. Gosvami. You cannot be dictated by the senses. You have to dictate to the senses
- Gosani means gosvami. A person who has full control over the senses and mind is called a gosvami or gosani
- Gosvami does not mean go-dasa. Go means senses, and dasa means servant. If we keep the title gosvami and become servant of the senses, it is cheating

- Gosvami means controlling the senses, who has completely controlled the senses. Svami or gosvami. Svami also means that and gosvami also means the same thing

H
- Haridasa Thakura daily chanted 300,000 names. Sixteen rounds is about 28,000 names. There is no need to imitate Haridasa Thakura or the other Gosvamis, but chanting the holy name a fixed number of times daily is essential for every devotee

- He is very influential man and has rendered sincere service to my Guru Maharaja by translating many Goswami literatures in Telugu language, as well as in English. With his cooperation there is possibility of opening a branch in Bombay

- However, according to the statements of Srila Rupa Gosvami in this verse, an American gosvami and a gosvami in a family of acaryas are nondifferent
I

- I want that those who come to Vrndavana, whether grhasthas or sannyasis, behave on the level of real goswamis
- I wrote you one letter regarding the translation work of Nrsimhavallabha Goswami and sons. I have not received any reply from you although I am very much anxious to know the result
- If I am servant of the senses, how I can become gosvami, how I can become svami? That is false, hypocrisy

- If one is engaged in these family affairs only, sexual affairs, he's not a gosvami
- If practiced, it can be reduced, practiced. We see in the life of Gosvamis. About them, it is said: nidrahara-viharakadi-vijitau. They conquered over sleeping, eating. If we conquer over eating, then we can conquer over sleeping and other things also
- If we chant Hare Krsna mantra according to the instructions . . . Sankhya-purvaka-nama-gana-natibhih (Sad-goswamy-astaka 6). We have to practice. Because Gosvamis, they kept a number, a numerical strength
- If we follow our predecessors, our Gosvamis, who were all ministers . . . But they came to Vrndavana to practice. What? Nidrahara-viharakadi-vijitau, to conquer over sleeping, eating and mating
- If you imitate spiritual life for material benefit, then it will be failure. So the Gosvamis did not do so. They gave up this material opulence for spiritual advancement, positive
- In actuality there cannot be a family of gosvamis based on material considerations, caste or heredity. The gosvami title is actually the monopoly of the pure devotees

- In the Bhagavad-gita, worship of the acarya is recommended. The acaryas and the gosvamis are always well-wishers for the general public

- In their mature stage of love of Godhead, when they were living in Vrndavana, the gosvamis would also cry - Radharani, where are You? Where are Your associates? Where are You, O son of Nanda? Where are you all. In this way they were searching after Krsna
- In this way (by searching after & crying, "Where are You? Where are You Radharani? Where are You Krsna? Are You there by Govardhana Hill?"), throughout the whole tract of Vrndavana, the gosvamis were crying and searching after Radha & Krsna like madmen
- In Vaisnava society there are many types of Vaisnavas. Some of them are called gosvamis, some are called svamis, some are prabhus, and some are prabhupada. One is not recognized, however, simply by such a name

- It is the grace of Lord Caitanya that He accepted these two exalted personalities as His disciples and raised them to the position of gosvamis, the highest position of brahminical culture
- It is through the endeavor of the Gosvamis that all the important temples in Vrndavana were established
- It is with this conviction that we declare in our Back to Godhead magazine that devotees like the gosvamis living in Vrndavana who purposely commit some sinful activity are born in the bodies of dogs, monkeys and tortoises in that holy land
- It was not that the disciples were family members of the original Gosvamis. All the Gosvamis were in the renounced order of life, and Jiva Gosvami in particular was a lifelong brahmacari
M

O
- One can advance by controlling the senses (yamaih). By controlling the senses, one can become a svami or gosvami. One who is enjoying this supertitle, svami or gosvami, must be very strict in controlling his senses
- One can also become a hero by being master of the senses, a gosvami. Material activities are false heroic activities, whereas restraining the senses from material engagement is great heroism
- One defect in Hari Goswami is that although he wants to cooperate he wants to keep himself a little aloof as a goswami. I wish that he should mix with us with open mind, without reservation
- One gosvami, he has taken very much objection to this writing, and he is making propaganda against me like anything. There was arrangement of reception. He stopped it
- One has to become a gosvami and control his senses. One should not simply use his senses for sense gratification; rather, the senses should be employed just as much as required for maintaining body and soul together
- One must be master of the senses. That is defined by Rupa Gosvami, Rupa Gosvami. When they were ministers they were not gosvami. But when they become disciples of Lord Caitanya, Sanatana Gosvami and Rupa Gosvami, & was trained by Him, they became gosvami
- One must have disciplinary training in controlling speaking, anger, the tongue, the mind, the belly and the genitals. One who has controlled the particular senses mentioned above is called a gosvami
- One must strictly follow the principles given by Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu in this verse. If one simply follows in the footsteps of Lord Caitanya and the Gosvamis, certainly he will achieve the ultimate goal of life, the lotus feet of Sri Krsna
- One name is sufficient. If you can chant one name only, that is sufficient. But that is not possible. So to understand the value of name at least we must have some numerical strength. All the Gosvamis used to do that. We follow their footprints
- One should avoid those who simply dress as Vaisnavas or so-called gosvamis, and those who make a business by selling Vedic mantras and reciting Srimad-Bhagavatam to maintain their families
- One should not be jealous, whether he is born in a family of gosvamis or has the title of gosvami awarded to him. As soon as anyone becomes envious, he falls from the platform of paramahamsa
- One should not think, "Oh, here is an American gosvami," and discriminate against him. Nor should one think, "Here is a nityananda-vamsa-gosvami
- One should serve the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu through the instructions of the great Gosvamis of Vrndavana. This is called tandera carana sevi
- One who can control the forces of speech, mind, anger, belly, tongue and genitals is known as a gosvami and is competent to accept disciples all over the world - NOI 1
- One who can keep himself steady and resist the attraction of material nature is certainly a hero and deserves to be called a gosvami. Unless one is master of the senses, he cannot become a gosvami
- One who can subdue the senses is called a gosvami, but one who cannot control the mind is called go-dasa. The mind directs the activities of the senses, which are expressed through different outlets, as described in the next verse
- One who controls the mind (and therefore the senses as well) is called gosvami, or svami, and one who is controlled by the mind is called godasa, or the servant of the senses. BG 1972 purports
- One who controls the mind, therefore the senses as well, is called gosvami or svami. One who is controlled by the mind is called go-dasa, or the servant of the senses
- One who is able to control the forces of all these different senses, and the mind, is called gosvami, or svami. Such gosvamis live strictly controlled lives, and forego altogether the forces of the senses. BG 1972 purports
- One who is still in family life should not misuse the title gosvami
- One who is under the control of the senses, he is go-dasa. Go means senses, and dasa means servant. And one who is master of the senses, he's gosvami
- One who perfectly engages in devotional service is therefore called gosvami or svami, master of the senses. Unless one is master of the senses, he should not accept the renounced order of life, sannyasa
- Only one who is a bona fide spiritual master expanding the cult of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Krsna consciousness movement, and who is in full control of his senses can be addressed as a gosvami
- Outside of the temple (of Ekacakra-grama) are tombs of the Gosvamis, and there is a small river known as the Maudesvara, which is called the water of Yamuna. Within half a mile from this small river is the birthplace of Sri Nityananda Prabhu
R
- Radha-bhava must be understood from the Gosvamis, those who are actually controllers of the senses
- Radharamana Gosvami is Gopala Bhatta Gosvami's descendant
- Reducing eating, sleeping, mating, that is spiritual advancement. This is the test. The more you reduce... The idea is to bring it to nil. Just like Gosvamis, they did it
- Rupa and Sanatana were made the prime ministers of spreading sankirtana movement, the Caitanya cult. We are sitting in Rupa Gosvami's place. Officially, they become Muhammadan, but by the grace of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, they became Gosvami
- Rupa Gosvami and Sanatana Gosvami had practically become Mohammedans and had therefore changed their names to Dabira Khasa and Sakara Mallika, but Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself made them gosvamis
- Rupa Gosvami was the leader of all the Gosvamis, and to guide our activities he gave us this Upadesamrta (The Nectar of Instruction) to follow
S
- Santosa das met him at his residence in Vrindaban and proposed to give Srivatsa Goswami all of my books in exchange for a set of "Goswami literature" edited by Sri Puridasa
- So far my name is concerned, there is no need of adding Tridandi Goswami, but simply have it as A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, as it is already done in my other books, it will be continued
- Some high-caste brahmanas and gosvamis refuse to take prasadam in the temples of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Actually this is against the instruction of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- Some of the Gosvamis, like Raghunatha dasa Gosvami, were chanting very rigidly and also offering obeisances very rigidly
- Some people think that Radha and Krsna are so cheap that They may be seen every night, but this is not the teaching of the gosvamis who were always searching after Krsna crying - Where are You Krsna? Are You on the bank of the Yamuna
- Some people think that Radha and Krsna are so cheap that They may be seen every night, but this is not the teaching of the gosvamis who were always searching after Krsna crying - Where are You Krsna? Are You there by Govardhana Hill
- Some people think that Radha and Krsna are so cheap that They may be seen every night, but this is not the teaching of the gosvamis who were always searching after Krsna crying - Where are You? Where are You Radharani? Where are You Krsna
- Sometimes people flatly tell the American devotees that their sannyasa or title of gosvami is not bona fide
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu belonged to this Madhva-sampradaya; therefore, Brahmaji, Narada, Vyasa, down to Madhva, Caitanya and the Gosvamis all belonged to the same line of disciplic succession
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Sri Advaita Gosani Prabhu are natural gosvamis because They belong to the visnu-tattva category
- Sri Ramacharitamanasa by Goswami Tulasi das is not very authorized, and Ramayana is authorized
- Sri Rupa Gosvami presented himself as an ordinary grhastha and minister in government service but became a gosvami when he was actually elevated by the instruction of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu
- Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura notes that the son of Gosvami Bhattacarya, Sri Radharamana Gosvami Bhattacarya, refused the title gosvami because it is generally meant for sannyasis, those who have taken the renounced order of life
- Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura said that the grhastha asrama, or the status of family life, is a sort of concession for sense gratification. Therefore a grhastha should not falsely adopt the title gosvami
- Srila Narottama dasa Thakura, in his prayers to the Gosvamis, has explained: When I shall be eager to understand the literature given by the Gosvamis, then I shall be able to understand the transcendental love affairs of Radha and Krsna
- Srila Rupa Gosvami and Sanatana Gosvami were previously ministers directly in charge of the government of Nawab Hussain Shah, and they were also householders, but later they became gosvamis
- Srila Sanatana Gosvami and Srila Rupa Gosvami became genuine gosvamis after dedicating their lives to the service of the Lord
- Such (Dhaumya and Krpa) brahmanas are not only rare, but also not available in this age, & therefore, for the purpose of spiritual upliftment in this fallen age, the Gosvamis prefer the purificatory processes under Pancaratrika formulas to the Vedic rites
- Such contradictions (as Krsna may act like the gopis and feel separation from Krsna, although He is Krsna Himself) are very difficult to understand unless a devotee strictly follows the Vaisnava philosophy under the direction of the Gosvamis
T
- That grhamedhi, grhastha - appearing like the same. But grhastha means no dictation of the sense. Then you become gosvami
- That is the Gosvamis, nidrahara-vihara-vijitau (Sri Sad Gosvamy Astaka), conquered over sleeping, eating and mating. Because these three . . . four things ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithun . . . these are material life
- That is the significance of svami and gosvami. It is not the dress. One who has controlling power, one who is not dictated by the senses, one who is not servant of the senses
- The acarya or the gosvami must be well acquainted with all these literatures. To hear and explain them is more important than reading them
- The acaryas, Rupanuga, Gosvamis, they left literature, but they did not attempt to preach practically. And Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he was very, very anxious to preach this Caitanya cult in the Western countries
- The bhagavad-dutas are gosvami, and the servants of the senses are go-dasa
- The bona fide spiritual master, who has full control over his senses, engages twenty-four hours a day in the Lord's service. He can therefore be addressed as gosani or gosvami
- The cause of all causes, the supreme controller, is Krsna. And that Krsna consciousness we are presenting all over the world. And this Hanuman Gosvami has given me the credit that I am representing Krsna
- The conclusion is that one who can control these six items - speech, mind, anger, tongue, belly and genitals - is to be called a svami or gosvami. Svami means master, and gosvami means master of the go, or senses
- The disciples of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Maharaja are all Godbrothers
