We should take this opportunity, Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-saṅgaḥ (Cc. Madhya 23.14-15). This association, society, of sādhus, who have dedicated their life for understanding Kṛṣṇa, for serving Kṛṣṇa, they are sādhu.

Srimad-Bhagavatam Lectures

Sādhu means saintly person, devotee of God. They are sādhu.
Lecture on SB 1.2.6 -- Mauritius, October 5, 1975:

Religion is disturbed by duṣkṛtina, demons, and those who are saintly person, they execute religion. So paritrāṇāya sādhūnām. Sādhu means saintly person, devotee of God. They are sādhu. And asādhu, or demon, means persons who deny the authority of God. They are called demons.

Don't think that these Europeans or Americans, they are mlecchas and yavanas. That is offense. Because they are sādhu.
Lecture on SB 1.7.51-52 -- Vrndavana, October 8, 1976:

Don't think that these Europeans or Americans, they are mlecchas and yavanas. That is aparādha. Offense. Because they are sādhu. They do not know... They have accepted Kṛṣṇa without any hodgepodge understanding, that "This is also good, this is also good, this is also good." They are strictly following the instruction of their spiritual master.

Vasudeva and Devakī was in trouble by Kaṁsa, therefore He came. So paritrāṇāya sādhūnām (BG 4.8). They are sādhus, they are devotees. For them He comes.
Lecture on SB 1.8.20 -- Mayapura, September 30, 1974:

Kṛṣṇa does not require to come. He comes only to give protection and pleasure to the devotees. That is his aim. Therefore it is said that paramahaṁsānāṁ munīnām amalātmanām. For them, bhakti-yoga-vidhānārtham. For increase their bhakti-yoga. If you are a devotee of Kṛṣṇa, you are in distress by the demons, and if Kṛṣṇa saves you, then you become more: "More I am devotee, more I am devotee." You see. So Kṛṣṇa came so many times. Just like His devotee Prahlāda Mahārāja was in trouble by his father. So He came. Similarly, Vasudeva and Devakī was in trouble by Kaṁsa, therefore He came. So paritrāṇāya sādhūnām (BG 4.8). They are sādhus, they are devotees. For them He comes.

Advaita Ācārya, Gadādhara, Śrīvāsa, Haridāsa Ṭhākura. They are sādhus.
Lecture on SB 1.16.11 -- Los Angeles, January 8, 1974:

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is accepted by sādhus like Advaita Ācārya, Gadādhara, Śrīvāsa, Haridāsa Ṭhākura, in His own... They are sādhus, accepted. And śāstra also says. In Mahābhārata, in Śrīmad-Bhāgavata, in the Upaniṣads, Purāṇas, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's name and activities are mentioned.

They are, the sādhus, the devotees, who are living in the temple.
Lecture on SB 3.25.15 -- Bombay, November 15, 1974:

They are, the sādhus, the devotees, who are living in the temple, if you associate with them, talk with them about Kṛṣṇa, then you'll be benefited.

They have only business of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. That's all. Therefore they are sādhu.
Lecture on SB 3.25.21 -- Bombay, November 21, 1974:

Here there is no other thing because here all the boys and girls and devotees, they are concerned with Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. That's all. The whole business, whole day's business, whole night's business, is Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. From early morning at three o'clock to night, ten o'clock, they have only business of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. That's all. Therefore they are sādhu. Therefore they are sādhu. This is the symptom of sādhu.

Depend on Kṛṣṇa. They are sādhu. These are the ornament of sādhu.
Lecture on SB 3.25.21 -- Bombay, November 21, 1974:

We are spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the krūraḥ, which is more dangerous than a snake, they are putting, putting so many impediments. But we have to tolerate. We have no other alternative. You see? Ajāta-śatravaḥ śāntāḥ. Be peaceful. What can be done? Depend on Kṛṣṇa. Sādhavaḥ. They are sādhu. They are sādhu. Sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ. These are the ornament of sādhu.

Those who have no desire for sense gratification. They are sādhu.
Lecture on SB 6.1.14 -- Bombay, November 10, 1970:

Śrīdhara Swami is giving note, niṣkāma, those who have no desire. So this desire..., niṣkāma means those who have no desire for sense gratification. They are sādhu. And who are they? Devotees. Akāma. Their other name is akāma. They have no desires. Personally they have no desires. Their only business is how to satisfy Kṛṣṇa. That is their only desire.

Because they have devoted, they have sacrificed their life for Kṛṣṇa, they are sādhu.
Lecture on SB 7.7.30-31 -- Mombassa, September 12, 1971:

If one is staunchly devoted to Kṛṣṇa, he is sādhu. Not exactly that he has to observe all the rules and regulations because by practice... Just like these European and American students, sometimes they cannot adopt to the principles of sadācāra, as it is recommended. But that doesn't matter. Because they have devoted, they have sacrificed their life for Kṛṣṇa, they are sādhu. One has to (indistinct). They should be given the respect of a sādhu because they have no other business than Kṛṣṇa. That is recommended from Kṛṣṇa.

Those who are always keeping Kṛṣṇa within the heart, they are sādhu.
Lecture on SB 7.9.37 -- Mayapur, March 15, 1976:

Those who are always keeping Kṛṣṇa within the heart, they are sādhu. So paritrāṇāya sādhūnām. They are sad... They are sādhus. Sādhu means who are always engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service, always thinking of Kṛṣṇa.

General Lectures

These European and American boys, you do not find they are correct to the principle, still they are sādhu because they have engaged themselves in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
Pandal Lecture at Cross Maidan -- Bombay, March 26, 1971:

Sādhu means devotees. It is stated in the Bhagavad-gītā, api cet su-durācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk, sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ (BG 9.30). Even these boys, these European and American boys, you do not find they are correct to the principle, still they are sādhu because they have engaged themselves in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ. Even though you find cause, because they have forefather, their fathers, they did not teach anything. They are learning new. So even you find some fault in their activities, don't think that they are not sādhus. Kṛṣṇa said, api cet su-durācāro bhajate mām ananya-bhāk, sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ (BG 9.30). Sādhu. Sādhu means those who are devotees.

These persons, because they are sādhus, they are so much tolerant.
Lecture -- Jakarta, February 27, 1973:

Sādhu means he's tolerant. He's tolerant, titikṣavaḥ. At the same time, kāruṇikāḥ, very merciful. Now these persons, because they are sādhus, they are so much tolerant. Anyone who's preaching about God, they're sādhu, because they have to meet so many dangerous people. Just like Lord Jesus Christ.

Those who are preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness. They are sādhus.
Lecture -- Jakarta, February 27, 1973:

Those who are preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness... Just like all kinds of impediments. They are (indistinct) sādhus. Na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ (BG 18.69). Kṛṣṇa says, "Nobody is dearer than him who is preaching," because he has to face so many impediments, so many obstructions.

Conversations and Morning Walks

1971 Conversations and Morning Walks

Those who are constantly engaged in My devotional service, they are sādhus.
Room Conversation -- April 6, 1971, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: So first of all we have to know who is a sādhu. He specifically meant paritrāṇāya sādhūnām. Sādhūnām. Who is a sādhu? That sādhu is also described. Bhajate mām ananya-bhāk sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ: (BG 9.30) "Those who are constantly engaged in My devotional service, they are sādhus."

1974 Conversations and Morning Walks

You see so many gañjā-smokers, they are sādhus, bābā-sādhu.
Morning Walk -- February 20, 1974, Bombay:

Dr. Patel: Sannyāsīs, those nāgā-bābās, they smoke.

Prabhupāda: Not nāgā... He was a regular sannyāsī, Māyāvādī sannyāsī. So my father was giving them the saffron cloth and gañjā. People accept it that this is one of the items.

Dr. Patel: That gañjā should be given.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Yes, so badly impressed. So this gañjā-smoking has spread all over the world as the hippie movement.

Dr. Patel: I thought that the hippies started from those, this (indistinct) part.

Prabhupāda: No, no. The hippie movement was started from India. You see so many gañjā-smokers, they are sādhus, bābā-sādhu.

Dr. Patel: Bābās also, those nāgā-bābās, they all smoke...

Prabhupāda: No, no. Nāgā and also "sāgā (?)" also. All of them gañjā-... (laughs)

1975 Conversations and Morning Walks

They are sādhu because they are Kṛṣṇa conscious.
Morning Walk -- November 4, 1975, Bombay:

Dr. Patel: All these sādhus: satyam, śaucam, abhaya, śānti, and all these things...

Prabhupāda: But sādhu... They are sādhu because they are Kṛṣṇa conscious. Sādhur eva sa mantavyaḥ (BG 9.30). Api cet sudurācaraḥ. Their case is different.
