Nectar of Devotion

According to ācāryas expert in the study of psychological activities, these attempts at hiding one's real affections are another part of ecstatic feeling for Kṛṣṇa.
Nectar of Devotion: There is a symptom of ecstatic love known as concealment, or trying to hide one's real mental condition by externally showing another attitude. In this state of mind one tries to hide his mind by looking away in different directions, by unnecessarily trying for something which is impossible, or by using words which cover one's real thoughts. According to ācāryas expert in the study of psychological activities, these attempts at hiding one's real affections are another part of ecstatic feeling for Kṛṣṇa. In the Tenth Canto, Thirty-second Chapter, verse 15, of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Śukadeva Gosvāmī states, "My dear King, the gopīs were always beautiful and decorated with confidential smiles and alluring garments. In their movements, intended to give impetus to lusty feelings, they would sometimes press Kṛṣṇa's hand on their laps, and sometimes they would keep His lotus feet on their breasts. After doing this, they would talk with Kṛṣṇa as if they were very angry with Him."

Lectures

Srimad-Bhagavatam Lectures

You can save your son, your disciple, your relative or anyone whom you love, real affection. Then give him Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and he'll be saved from death.
Lecture on SB 1.8.47 -- Mayapura, October 27, 1974: One should not become father, one should not become mother, one should not become guru, one should not become relative, husband, and so many. The list is there. Why? If he cannot save his subordinate from imminent death. That is father; that is mother; that is guru. And how one can be saved from imminent death or repeated death? Simply by Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
janma karma me divyaṁ
yo jānāti tattvataḥ
tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma
naiti...
[Bg. 4.9]
You can save your son, your disciple, your relative or anyone whom you love, real affection. Then give him Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and he'll be saved from death. That is the purport of this.
Real affection is to the soul.
Lecture on SB 7.6.9 -- New Vrindaban, June 25, 1976: Sneha-pāśair. This sneha-pāśa, sneha is there. Sneha means affection. Everyone got affection. The cats and dogs they have got also affection. But the affection is wrongly placed. We are affectionate to the skin, to this body. So this is wrong affection. Real affection is to the soul. That we do not know, we have no information. We are loving our child, that is very good, but not the soul, but the body. If someway or other the child is dead or my father is dead, we cry, "Father has gone." Why father has gone away? The body which you loved, that is lying there. So we do not know whom to love. So if we love actually, let us love the soul. How the soul... Love..., to love means for benefit. That is real love. I love you for your benefit; you love me for my benefit. If I so-called love you for my benefit, that is lust.
Our aim is how to become free from this material bondage and real sneha, real affection, real love should be spread.
Lecture on SB 7.6.9 -- New Vrindaban, June 25, 1976: Sneha-pāśair. Otherwise we shall be on a platform of false love. The platform of false love we know: today one pair is married, but because the love is on the false platform, the next day there is divorce. That is not love. That kind of love has no meaning, that kind of affection has no meaning. It is simply bondage. So try to... Our aim is how to become free from this material bondage and real sneha, real affection, real love should be spread. And that can be done through Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Otherwise, it is all false.

General Lectures

We have to learn from the authorized śāstras, from the Bhagavad-gītā, from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, from Vedas, not from the rascals. Then you'll understand. Your real affection for Kṛṣṇa will be awakened and your life will be successful.
Lecture -- Gorakhpur, February 18, 1971: We have to develop our natural affection. Natural affection. Just like a father loves the child, child loves the father. That is natural. At least, father loves the child without any thinking of renunciation. No. That is natural. Similarly, when we shall develop, awaken... Not develop; it is already there. Simply to awaken. How it is awakened? Śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte. As you are coming here, if you try to hear the real fact of your relationship with Kṛṣṇa and yourself from the śāstras... Because ataeva kṛṣṇa veda purāṇa karilā. We have to learn from the authorized śāstras, from the Bhagavad-gītā, from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, from Vedas, not from the rascals. Then you'll understand. Your real affection for Kṛṣṇa will be awakened and your life will be successful.

Conversations and Morning Walks

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

That is real affection.
Room Conversation -- October 9, 1977, Vrndavana:

Kīrtanānanda: Śrīla Prabhupāda... (long pause)

Prabhupāda: Who is he?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Kīrtanānanda Mahārāja.

Prabhupāda: Oh. Hm. So, what you want? Eh?

Kīrtanānanda: (crying) If Kṛṣṇa gives you the choice, don't go. We need you.

Prabhupāda: That is your trouble now, distress.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yes, Prabhupāda.

Brahmānanda: We have all met together, Śrīla Prabhupāda. We want you to remain and lead this movement and finish the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

Prabhupāda: Hm.

Brahmānanda: We said you must remain at least another ten years. You've only done fifty percent work.

Prabhupāda: No. There are many good... Everyone will have. Hm. Good to hear. Hm. All right. (devotees laugh with relief)

Kīrtanānanda: Haribol.

Prabhupāda: So give me something to drink.

Devotees: Jaya Śrīla Prabhupāda!

Kīrtanānanda: All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: That is real affection.

Kīrtanānanda: Is someone getting?

Hari-śauri: Yes. Upendra's bringing something.

Brahmānanda: What does he have? Grape juice?

Correspondence

1973 Correspondence

That is real affection, to make sure my child gets back to Godhead, that is my real responsibility as a parent.
Letter to Satyabhama -- Hyderabad 23 March, 1973: Why should the parents not feel attachment for their children, that is natural. But our affection is not simply sentimental, we offer our children the highest opportunity to become trained up in Krsna consciousness very early so as to assure their success in this life to go back to Godhead for sure. That is real affection, to make sure my child gets back to Godhead, that is my real responsibility as a parent. And I have seen that Gurukula offers this opportunity more than any other place anywhere. So I think that you are intelligent girl, and you can explain it to others in this way.
