Vaniquotes - the compiled essence of Vedic knowledge

Manual

Manual:Troubleshooting

Here we encourage compilers, editors, trainers and developers to create a list of troubleshooting points that they encounter.

Compiling troubleshooting

Your expressions list did not get saved

  • If your entry in the "Page facts info Box" is not saved, then you probably forgot to press "Return" on your keyboard.
    • Do it again. It will work.

Your goal number did not get saved

  • If your entry in the "Page facts info Box" is not saved, then you probably forgot to press "Return" on your keyboard.
    • Do it again. It will work.

Expressions not highlighted in quotes

  • If no expressions are highlighted, check to make sure you have expressions listed under "Expressions researched", at the top of the page. If no expressions are listed, refer to "Your expressions list did not get saved" above.
  • If some expressions are highlighted and others are not, you probably need to add the ones which are not highlighted to your expressions list.
    • This often happens when there is punctuation or a hyphen involved with the expressions. Vedabase will search for an expression and return hits based on the words alone, regardless of whether or not there is a comma, hyphen, period or other character present. Wiki, however, reads expressions exactly as they appear. Thus Wiki will not recognize a match between, say, "self realization" and "self-realization".
  • If there is not an exact match in the expressions list for the expressions which are not highlighted, you will need to add those expressions to the list. To add expressions:
    • Return to the compile form (click on tabs edit > compile)
    • To the right of the expressions line (in the Page fact section) there is green plus sign [+]. Click on this. A box will then open up.
    • Type the expression you want to add into the box. No quotation marks [" "] or pipes [|] are required - just the text as it is read on the page. If you have more than one expression to add, separate each expression with a comma.
    • Press the enter key on your keyboard to add and save the expressions to the expressions list. When you return to your finished page, you should see the added expressions highlighted.
  • In some cases, an expression may not be highlighted due to the error that causes italics to appear incorrectly. This would happen if there are quotation marks involved around the expression. To check if this is what is happening, see Italics below for what to look for and how to correct it.

See also Manual:Tools-Compile form-Expressions box for additional information.

Your Quote is completely indented

This happens if you start the quote with a cited verse. To correct this, do the following:

  1. Click on the Compile Tab;
  2. Click edit Quote (or double click) on the Editing form;
  3. Within the Text box:
    1. At the beginning of the verse type <p> and at the end of the verse type </p> . Notice the </p> at the end has a '/'
    2. Place a colon ":" at the beginning of each line of the verse and also before the reference.
  • Note: If the quote starting with with a cited verse had been previously saved, it will have <DD> and </DD> tags around it. Just remove these tags and follow the procedure above.

Following this you can continue with the compiling process (choose section, heading, "insert" the quote and finally "save" the page).

Example: For the purpose of illustration let's take verse 65 from canto 4, chapter 29. In the Quote box of the compiling form the quote for SB 4.29.65 (purport) will look like the following:

<p>
:kṛṣṇa-bahirmukha hañā bhoga-vāñchā kare
:nikaṭa-stha māyā tāre jāpaṭiyā dhare
 :(Prema-vivarta)
</p>

Actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, is the supreme enjoyer. When a living entity wants to imitate Him, he is given a chance to satisfy his false desire to lord it over material nature. That is the beginning of his downfall. As long as he is within this material atmosphere, he has a subtle vehicle in the form of the mind, which is the stockpile of all kinds of material desires. Such desires become manifest in different bodily forms. Śrīla Nārada Muni requests the King to accept this fact from him because Nārada is an authority. The conclusion is that the mind is the storehouse of our past desires, and we have this present body due to our past desires. Similarly, whatever we desire in this present body will be expressed in a future body. Thus the mind is the source of different kinds of bodies.

Extra Vedabase reference

  • If you find that your quote in the compiling form has an extra Vedabase reference at the bottom of the box the reason will be that you selected part of the next Vedabase text. This happens especially when copying the end of purports. Even selecting an empty space may cause you to get the wrong reference.
    • To avoid this be attentive while placing your cursor over the text you are wanting to select. Sometimes this error is not found until the page is saved. When finding the error, you have to simply manually delete the extra reference and correct the vanisource link with the proper number.

Italics

  • If you see in your saved page parts of quotes are italicized but it looks as though it is incorrect that will be for the following reason. Somehow or other, the 2nd quotation mark got converted into two separate single quote marks (' '). The single quotes marks is the Wiki markup for italics.
    • You should delete the two single quote marks, and insert a double quotation mark. When you save the page the italics will have disappeared.
    • This is generally found only in the letters.

Formatting of cited verses

  • If you see once you have saved your page that a cited verse in a purport or lecture is in one continual line and not properly spaced in 4 lines it will be for the following reason. There was no colon(:) placed at the beginning of each line of the cited verse.
    • This can be corrected manually by going to edit and placing before each line a colon (:). The colon will indent each line a few spaces. There should also be a line between the beginning and the end of the cited verse.

Compiling

Query

1. Search for your expressions

  • To copy and paste the expressions list from Vaniquotes into Vedabase for query:
    • In compile mode, highlight the expressions list for your page (located under "Page facts" at the top)and select copy (Ctrl+C).
    • Click on the binoculars icon in Vedabase (located on toolbar at top) to open Advanced Query.
    • Paste (Ctrl+V) your expressions into the "Query for" box. This will calculate the total number of hits for the expressions.
    • Click "OK". The Query box will then disappear and you will be brought to the first hit on the list. The Contents menu will also reveal how many hits there are in each of the ticked sources.

(If the number of hits does not match the goal number given in the page facts, be sure you have all the relevant sources ticked and all the expressions pasted properly into the Query box.)

2. Locate your starting point

  • In Vaniquotes, identify which quotes the previous compilers completed.
  • Go to Vedabase, find the last compiled quote, and then go to the next hit. This is where you will begin.
    • "Next Hit" (F4) will take you to the next place where the expression is present.
    • "Next Partition Hit" (F8) will take you to the next full paragraph where the expression is present.
    • To go to earlier hits, use "Previous Hit" (F3) or "Previous Partition Hit" (F7)

For details and further information: See Manual:Compiling Process - Find Quotes in Vedabase

For details and further information on searching in Vedabase: See Manual:Tools - External Tools - Vedabase - Vedabase Query Box

Inserting Quotes

1. Copy and paste

Procedure:
  • In Vedabase, highlight the section of text you wish to include for the quote.
  • Click on the "copy with reference" icon (the blue "a" with a line over it, on the toolbar at the top).
  • Toggle back to your Vaniquotes compiling page.
  • Paste the copied text into the compiling form Quote box.
Tips:
For details and further information: See Manual:Compiling Process - Choose Quote and Pasting the Quote into the Compile Form

2. Verify reference

Sometimes when you are copying at the end of a purport it will pick up the reference for the next verse.

  • If this happens, you will see a reference included with the text at the end of your quote.
  • You can correct this error now by simply deleting that added reference from the quote and changing the incorrect citation in the Reference box to the correct one.
For details and further information: See Manual:Compiling Process - Verify Reference

3. Add heading

  • From the text of the quote, select a portion to form a heading.
    • Headings should contain the expression, be at least one complete sentence, and use Srila Prabhupada's exact words as far as reasonable.
    • Headings may vary depending on the nature of the quote or the expression. It is not absolutely necessary to include headings, but the pages should be consistent as to whether or not headings are being used.

Note: Minor edits are permitted for clarity in headings, but no editing is permitted for the quotes.

For details and further information: See Manual:Compiling Process - Make a Heading

4. Specify section (translation/purport) as required.

For details and further information: See Manual:Compiling Process - Choose a Section

5. Insert the quote

  • Click on the green "Insert quote" button. This will insert your quote to the bottom of the page.
  • If you need to insert your quote to somewhere other than the bottom, click here for instructions.
  • The statistics tag should be added automatically to the quote when it is inserted. If it is not, refer to Special Conditions - "Reference not found" below for help.

6. Clear your form

Use the purple “Clear form” button, located to the lower left of the compiling form.

7. Go back to Vedabase and continue to the next quote (next hit/F4 or next partition hit/F8)

For details and further information on items 5-7: See Manual:Compiling Process - Insert Quotes

Remember: Not all hits are pertinent to Vaniquotes!
  • Watch for instances where Srila Prabhupada neither uses the expression himself nor addresses it in conversation. These should not be compiled.
  • Often an expression will be found being quoted from a verse or purport that is being read during a lecture or conversation. If Srila Prabhupada does not comment further on the expression, do not compile it.
  • For SB Canto 10.14 through Canto 12, compile only the translations.
  • Do not compile from:
    • Synonyms (in the word-for-word sections of translations)
    • Appendices
    • Forewords which were not written by Srila Prabhupada

Adding Section Headings (for Table of Contents)

Sections are broken into main section and subsections to create the Table of Contents:

BG - by Chapter sections
SB – by Canto sections
Other Books – by individual books
Lectures – by lecture type
Conversations – by year
Correspondence (Letters) – by year

To insert section headings:

  • Scroll down to the editing window on the compiling page (the window where your quotes were inserted).
  • Go to the "Vaniquotes sections" menu (to the left) to find the section heading list.
  • Click on the "Sections" folder to reveal the main sections and their respective subsections. These icons are used for inserting section headings.
    • The first icon on the list is for the main section (BG, SB, etc), and the icons below are for the subsection headings (Chapters 1-6, Canto 1, etc).
    • Quotes will be inserted in the same order that the sections appear in the sections list.
    • Section headings are placed to the far left-hand side just above the first quote where the new section/subsection begins.
  • Place your cursor where you want the heading to appear, and then click on the appropriate icon in the sections list to insert the heading.

For details and further information: See Compiling Process - Table of Contents

Finishing Up

1. Mark your completions

Completed sections are recorded in the “Page facts” area (upper portion of the page).

  • If you have finished the page, tick ALL.
  • If you have finished a main section of the page, tick it (BG, SB, CC, etc).

2. Save the page

Click on the "Save page" button. This will take you into view mode, where you can see your final product.

If you receive a message that you have lost your session data, you have probably timed out.

Time-outs:
  • The system may automatically log you out of your session. This can occur when you have been compiling for a relatively long period of time without saving your page. To recover and save what you've done:
    • Go to the edit window, located at the bottom portion of the page.
    • Select all text to copy.
    • Log back into Vaniquotes, return to your page.
    • Click on the "edit" tab to open the page in edit mode.
    • Paste the text into the edit window, over the top of what is already there, and then save the page. This will update the page with the work you completed.
For further information: See Compiling Troubleshooting: Timeout errors while saving

3. Self-edit

Review your page (in view mode) for formatting and content.

Most errors can be corrected in edit mode. Click on the "edit" tab to return to the edit screen for corrections.

Special Conditions

“Reference not found”

If a reference is not found automatically when you paste your quote into the compiling form:

  • Start typing in the reference exactly as it appears in Vedabase.
  • A drop-down list should appear, allowing you to scroll down and select the correct reference.
  • In some rare instances, the reference may still not be found. In this case,
    • Type in the reference manually exactly as you see it in Vedabase and insert the quote.
    • Type a note in the "Notes" line of the Page Facts section above the compiling form stating that the link to that quote is faulty. Our technicians can take it from there.
For details and further information: See Manual:Compiling Process - Verify Reference

“Set statistics tag manually”

If you receive this message:

  • Scroll down to where your quote was inserted.
  • Place your cursor at the very beginning of the quote (not the heading).
  • Go to “vaniquotes statistics” menu to the left of the form (just under the vaniquotes sections menu) and click on the Tags folder to open it.
  • Insert the tag by clicking on the appropriate statistics icon. (Be sure your tag matches the classification in Vedabase. For example, Philosophy Discussions are classified as Lectures, not Conversations.)

See also: Manual:Compiling Process - Insert Quotes. Click on "steps" (in green).

"Insert quote to cursor"

In some instances when you are working in Compile mode you will need to insert a quote somewhere other than at the bottom of the page. For instance, this happens when you are filling in a quote that was missed in the normal sequence. To insert the quote where it belongs:

  • Copy and paste the quote from Vedabase into the compiling form as usual (including heading, "translation/purport" specification and reference).
  • Scroll down to where you want to insert the quote.
  • Position your cursor at the left margin on the line where you want the quote to begin and click to mark the spot.
  • The green Insert button should now read, "Insert to cursor".
  • Click on "Insert to Cursor" to insert the quote at the spot you marked with your cursor.

Special Formatting

Some text requires manual formatting. Check for the following and mark up accordingly.

Speakers in Conversations and Lectures

Standard rule:

  • For Conversations –
    • The speaker must always be included in the quote. Even if Srila Prabhupada is the only person speaking, his name must be included as a speaker.
  • For Lectures –
    • Include the speaker only if a dialogue is taking place.
    • If Srila Prabhupada is the only speaker, do not include his name as the speaker (even if it is present in the passage you are copying).
    • Exception for Lectures: Philosophy Discussions (see below)

To format speakers:

  • All speakers' names should be placed starting at the left-hand margin.
    • For the first speaker's name, place your cursor immediately to the left of the name and hit return (“Enter” key) twice to bring it down to a new line, beginning at the left-hand margin. (Otherwise, it will appear directly after the source citation, on the same line.)
    • For subsequent speakers, insert one blank line (using the "Enter" key) between each speaker’s passage in the dialogue.
Philosophy Discussions

Philosophy Discussions are formatted like Conversations.

This does not change their main section category, however. They are still classified as Lectures.

Cited Verses within Quotes

Standard rule:

Multi-line quotes from sastra should be indented, as seen in Vedabase. This is not formatted automatically when you paste into Vaniquotes.

To indent:

Place a colon [:] immediately to the left of:
  • each line of the quoted passage
  • the citation [BG 2.13, etc]
:Make sure there is no space to the left of the colon or your text will appear in a box like this.

For detail and further information: See Compiling Troubleshooting - Formatting of Cited Verses.

Self-Edit Checklist

FORMATTING AND TYPOGRAPHY
What to check What you should see What is happening/How to correct it
Highlighting
  • expression highlighted at least once in each quote
Refer to Manual:Compiling process-Final edit on your finished work, item 2.

If there is highlighting for some expressions but not for others, see Manual:Troubleshooting-Expressions not highlighted in quotes above.

Table of contents
  • present, properly structured
    • main category > subcategories, in order of appearance in Vedabase
Refer to Manual:Compiling process-Final edit on your finished work, item 1.
Section headings
  • correct, properly placed
    • immediately above the first quote of section (above quote heading)
  • properly structured
    • main category > subcategories, each inserted only once
  • in proper order, as presented in Vedabase
    • (BG, SB, CC, Other books - by chapter/verse; Lectures - by type, Conversations, Correspondence - by year)
In edit mode: cut/paste, delete or add headings as required.

If the quotes are not in correct order, they can be cut/pasted into correct order while in edit mode.

After editing, you can check the Table of Contents to verify the changes. (The TOC will update according to the changes made to the section headings.)

Quote headings
  • consistent throughout page
    • used/not used as determined by overall nature of quote content
  • properly placed
    • immediately above quote content/below section headings
Correct in edit mode as needed. Be sure to check quotes that were already placed in the page, also.
Formatting: Speakers
  • aligned at left margin
  • double-spaced line between each speaker
Refer to Manual:Troubleshooting - Speakers in Conversations and Lectures above.
Formatting: Cited verses
  • each line of verse and citation indented (as seen in Vedabase)
Refer to Manual:Troubleshooting - Cited Verses within Quotes above.
Spacing: Lines
  • double space between quotes, quote headings, section headings
  • double space between speakers in dialogues
  • double space between paragraphs (as needed)
Correct in edit mode as needed.

Paragraph spacing: What appears as a new line in edit mode does not appear as a new line in view mode unless there it is double-spaced. Thus, if a long quote needs to be separated into paragraphs, you will need to go into edit mode and add line space between the paragraphs manually.

Spacing: Words
  • words properly spaced/not run together
  • single space between all words and sentences
Correct in edit mode as needed. (See also "Miscellaneous typography" below.)
Italics
  • no large sections of italics within quotes
Incorrect italics are sometimes generated in quotes from lectures and letters.

To correct: Refer to Manual:Compiling process Final edit on your finished work, or to Manual:Troubleshooting Italics.

Text in boxes
Text should not look like this.
If this happens, there is a space immediately preceeding the first letter in the line - this space needs to be removed.

Refer to Manual:Compiling process - Final edit on your finished work, item 5. See also Manual:Troubleshooting - Cited verses within quotes.

Diacritics
  • used in quotes, quote headings
  • not used in titles, expressions lists
Diacritic mark-up is available at the bottom of the page (in edit and compile modes). Simply mark with your cursor where you want the letter to appear, and then go to that letter in the Diacritics mark-up section and click on it. This will insert that letter into the word where you need it.
Bolding
  • only for translations (black font) and headings (green font)
Correct in edit mode as needed by adding/removing Wiki markups. The markup for bolding is three single quotation marks ['''Bold'''].

(On rare occasions a previously compiled translation will not appear in bold font, so be on the lookout.)

Miscellaneous typography
  • proper capitalization, punctuation, spacing in quote headings
  • proper spelling in page titles
  • no letters missing at the beginning of quotes
    • e.g. "n the material world" instead of "In the material world"
  • proper punctuation at end of quotes/headings
Correct as needed in edit mode. Little typographical errors can easily occur when copying/pasting, so be sure to scan your work with an eye open for these. Typos are particularly prone to appear at the beginning of a quote, the end of a quote, and within headings.

Common errors: spaces missing between sentences; initial letter missing from first word of quote; first word of heading not capitalized.

CONTENT
What to check What you should see What is happening/How to correct it
Expressions list
  • present and complete
    • reflected in highlighting within quotes
If no expressions are listed, refer to Manual:Troubleshooting - Your expressions list did not get saved.

If an expressions list is there, but some of the expressions in the quotes did not get highlighted, refer to Manual:Compiling process - Final edit on your finished work, item 2.

Notes
  • only as needed
    • e.g. for information on Vedabase queries or reporting bad Vanisource links
Quotes
  • pertinent to Vaniquotes
  • none skipped or missing
  • none duplicated
  • appropriate amount of text included
Refer to Manual:Troubleshooting Remember: Not all hits are pertinent to Vaniquotes!

If any quotes are missing or have been skipped, they will need to be inserted in the correct place on the page, according to the standard order. Refer to Manual: Troubleshooting - "Insert quote to cursor" for instructions on how to insert or reinsert a quote to a specific spot.

Headings
  • expression present in heading
  • relates well to quote
  • reads clearly, logically
Revise in edit mode as needed.
Speakers
  • present only in quotes involving dialogue
    • all Conversations
    • all Philosophy Discussions
    • Lectures with more than one speaker present
Refer to Manual:Troubleshooting - Speakers in Conversations and Lectures.
Vanisource links
  • correct reference to quote
  • successfully linking to source
  • should not see a Vedabase reference showing at the end of the quote
  • should not see a at the end of a quotes
See Manual:Compiling process - Verify reference.

An incorrect link might be due to the reference being typed incorrectly or the wrong reference selected from the drop-down menu. In either case, it can be corrected in compile mode.

Sometimes an apparently correct link does not work. This should be reported in the Notes section.

For incorrect reference pointing to the next verse: Refer to Manual:Troubleshooting Extra Vedabase reference. This can happen at the end of a purport if you copy as little as one space beyond the end of the text. The result is that the reference for the following verse is picked up instead of the reference for the verse you copied.

If you see at the end of the quote, it means that the statistics tag was not inserted.

  • To fix this, return to compile mode, insert the statistics tag manually, and save the page.
  • This will also update the statistics count in the page facts section. Check to make sure that the quote counts for each section are correct.
Page facts
  • statistics accurately reflect page content
    • goal listed (except when page is completed)
    • completed sections recorded (BG, SB, etc)
      • completed page = ALL
    • total quotes = total number of quotes presently on page
      • final page total should agree with original goal number (minus any hits which are not pertinent to Vaniquotes)
    • accurate totals by section
Missing expressions or goal: Refer to Manual:Troubleshooting - Compiling troubleshooting.

Completed sections missing: It is easiest just to go back to compile mode and tick them off in the "Page facts" section at the top. If page is complete, make sure you tick ALL.

Totals quotes/totals by section incorrect: Indicates an error with statistics tags. Go back to edit mode and make sure that each quote is preceded by the correct statistics tag (BG, OB, LEC, CON, etc.).

Categories
  • at least one present (in blue, not red) as appropriate
Red font means that the category does not exist.
  • Consult the "All categories" namespace to see if there is an error in spelling, capitalization or some part of the terminology (e.g. "Maya the Illusory Energy" is a category, but "Maya" and "Maya the illusory energy" are not).
