1976 Conversations and Morning Walks

Morning Walk -- February 9, 1976, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Yes. The father and his brother, so his daughter, his son can marry.

Bhavānanda: First cousins.

Prabhupāda: First cousin, yes.

Jayapatākā: There was some case of that in the royalty in France, and they got some bleeding disease from that, hemophilia. If they got any cut, then that would never heal. It would only bleed until they died.

Prabhupāda: So it is very scientific not to get married of the same blood.

Jayapatākā: Many people ask us what gotra we are.

Prabhupāda: You are acyuta-gotra. You can say acyuta-gotra. Acyuta means never falls down.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Never falls down.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Morning Walk -- February 26, 1976, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: No, no. From France.

Devotee (2): The professor.

Prabhupāda: Hm. He has mentioned, "From the Vedic standard, we are all uncivilized. We Westerners are uncivilized." He has admitted that. Actually they are.

Dayānanda: Yes, they will be shocked when they find this out because the idea is that...

Morning Walk -- February 28, 1976, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: It has been discussed by that professor.

Dayānanda: From France?

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Dayānanda: Yes.

Kīrtirāja: He said they have..., these translations of Aurobindo and Ramakrishna are modernized.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Morning Walk -- March 17, 1976, Mayapura:

Yaśodānandana: There is actual proof, Prabhupāda, that when these scientists and great, so-called poets, when they die, refusing to admit the authority of God, they die a very terrible death. Just like in France there used to be a great philosopher named Voltaire, and at the end of his life, because his whole writings and existence he tried to disprove the existence of God, he went insane, and he was eating his own stool and urine. And a priest came to him and said, "Why don't you accept the existence of God? You have become such great poet." He said, "I will never accept the existence of God." But he became to the point where he was eating his own stool and urine.

Prabhupāda: Just see.

Morning Walk -- April 14, 1976, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: No, they are doing.... They are doing in their own countries. In France the Roman Catholics and the Protestants, they are fighting and cutting each other's head. And still going on, it is. This is fanaticism.

Indian man: Political fanaticism.

Prabhupāda: (Hindi)

Dr. Patel: Yes, and said Sītā was a prostitute. I don't know.... And still, the government could, I mean, support them. It's too much of a joke.

Prabhupāda: But these.... You cannot.... Even on religious principle or so-called religion, you cannot make equality. The rogues will always remain, either Hindu, Muslim.

Morning Walk -- April 21, 1976, Melbourne:

Prabhupāda: And similarly six and seven in Europe.

Guru-kṛpā: Europe, there are.... England, France, and Germany. No, that's big. Say about...

Prabhupāda: Switzerland.

Guru-kṛpā: ...four or five weeks. Altogether it's eleven weeks, maybe even two and a half, three months.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: I think you were possibly wanting to stop in Tehran this year on the way back to India?

Prabhupāda: Hm, yes.

Morning Walk -- June 11, 1976, Los Angeles:

Prabhupāda: England was under Roman Empire. Normandy. Normandy?

Kīrtanānanda: That's France.

Prabhupāda: Yes. (break) ...these gardener, they're engaged here.

Rāmeśvara: Yes.

Prabhupāda: He comes a certain period and looks after the garden. (japa) (break) ...are very famous gardener. Unfortunately, in Japan there is no space to make garden.

Kīrtanānanda: They do everything in miniature.

Prabhupāda: Everything. They have got so much intellect, technologists, everything—no land.

Conversation with Clergymen -- June 15, 1976, Detroit:

Prabhupāda: Well, that is another.... That is exceptional. Generally, anyone is born, according to Vedic civilization, everyone is born fourth class. When he takes his birth, it is to be accepted he's a fourth class. Now by training, you can make him first class, second class, third class. By birth, everyone is fourth class.

Kern: I saw a film of a leader of ours, Jean Vanye(?) from Canada and France. He took five thousand retarded.... In Spanish, we say (indistinct), to Rome just for the experience. And they were all in wheelchairs, old and young and small ones—not understanding very much, but a wonderful experience for them, the weak and the wounded.

Jayādvaita: (explaining to Prabhupāda) One priest took many handicapped people, who...

Room Conversation -- June 17, 1976, Toronto:

Prabhupāda: You can know more about him from Haṁsadūta. As well Bhagavān.

Jagadīśa: Bhagavān recommended him. He had been in Paris before coming to America. But his complaint was that he didn't speak French, so he didn't like to stay in France. Then he came to America, and he was distributing books with Tripurāri Mahārāja.

Prabhupāda: Oh, he is very intelligent, there is no doubt, intelligent, and for preaching work he is good. But for becoming the manager in London, there were.... What is that boy in Bombay?

Hari-śauri: Oh, Prabhaviṣṇu?

Room Conversation -- June 17, 1976, Toronto:

Jagadīśa: There's one devotee who joined in Toronto, Frenchman, and he was in France at the time of the war. He's an older man. And he told me also.... His father was French, but he was sympathetic to the Nazis, and that it was actually Maxmillian or one of the Frenchmen who sided with the British, but the majority of the French people didn't mind the German occupation. It was due to one of the political factions siding with the British that there was a French underground and...

Prabhupāda: France, they are always enemy of Englishmen. There is is old history-Hundred Years' War, Seven Years' War. Napoleon also wanted to cut down the Britishers. France is dead enemy of England, and there is always competition.

Room Conversation -- June 17, 1976, Toronto:

Prabhupāda: France, they are always enemy of Englishmen. There is is old history-Hundred Years' War, Seven Years' War. Napoleon also wanted to cut down the Britishers. France is dead enemy of England, and there is always competition.

Hari-śauri: Even just with De Gaulle also.

Prabhupāda: France is not friendly to India, uh, England.

Hari-śauri: England has always been inimical with the rest of Europe. With Germany, France, Spain, everyone.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Because they thought, "This is a third-class nation, a small island, fishermen, and they have wealthy (indistinct)?" That is natural. Whole world. In our childhood, we used to see map, almost whole world red-red means British. (laughter) They said that there was no sunset in the British Empire.

Room Conversation -- June 29, 1976, New Vrindaban:

Dhṛṣṭadyumna: Not only the Africans, but this big, big professor, she is advocating that people should eat the bugs because they are good protein. She is experimenting different bugs to eat—the worm, the cockroach, the beetle—and she's making a big study, being paid money, how to feed people by eating insects.

Hari-śauri: They're already doing that. In France, you can buy cans of chocolate-coated ants, grasshoppers, frog's legs, bumblebees, fried bumblebees you can get. The French eat the most abominable foodstuff.

Puṣṭa Kṛṣṇa: The English think that way, anyway.

Hari-śauri: They all do.

Prabhupāda: Huh?

Arrival Room Conversation -- July 2, 1976, Washington, D.C.:

Prabhupāda: They identified "Napoleon is France." France is there, but where is Napoleon? They do not consider like this. Andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānāḥ (SB 7.5.31). Blind man be happy that Lincoln was here, that's all. Where he is now? Or he's finished. If he's finished, why you are worshiping his shirt and coat? What is the answer? What is their answer? If he's finished, what is the use of worshiping his shirt and coat?

Vipina: They say that what he accomplished, although it may not be the final answer, it was a step forward, and therefore he should be worshiped.

Prabhupāda: Then his worship must be... That means after furnishing (?) he is also finished? That is ignorance. That is not the fact. If he's finished, then what was the purpose of furnishing?(?)

Morning Walk -- July 13, 1976, New York:

Prabhupāda: He was so much insulted. Because every European countries were harassed, they had very bad idea about this Napoleon. Unnecessarily expanding the interest of France. "France and Napoleon, one." Now where is that rascal? France is there. This is going on. British Empire means bring money, hook or crook, in London, and you get the title, "lord," "baron," this... This was their policy. "Sir." All hooligans, thieves, rogues, they were made big, big respectable people. A deposit in the government, this lord family means they have to deposit, say, ten million pounds, like that, and the government takes that money as fixed deposit, and the interest the family will maintain the aristocracy. This is the lord's family. Some way or other you deposit ten million pounds and your family becomes lord's family. So people become mad after money, somehow or other bring money.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: You know French?

Pṛthu-putra: Yes, I am from France originally.

Prabhupāda: So what is your new publication?

Bhagavān: So I have a big surprise.

Devotees: Whew! Wow! It's fabulous! Wow!

Prabhupāda: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

Hari-śauri: This will make Rāmeśvara very envious.

Bhagavān: This is special. This is on all volumes.

Prabhupāda: Oh, how many chapters?

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Bhagavān: You met him several years ago, two years ago, when you were in France.

Prabhupāda: Yes, I met one...

Bhagavān: He took all your books.

Prabhupāda: Yes. So he likes our...

Bhagavān:. Oh, yes. We are very respected in the country.

Prabhupāda: That's nice. You must keep our position. Yes.

Bhagavān: Big Bhagavad-gītā, we have distributed fifty thousand.

Prabhupāda: Oh. This is Bhagavad-gītā.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: French language is understood practically all over Europe, especially France, Switzerland.

Bhagavān: Switzerland, Montreal, Belgium...

Pṛthu-putra: Luxembourg and Belgium also, they are French-speaking.

Bhagavān: And Africa. Much countries in Africa are French-speaking.

Prabhupāda: Oh. You can sell in Mauritius.

Bhagavān: Yes. I send books to Mauritius.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Everyone speaks French.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Jayatīrtha: In France the atmosphere is very nice.

Prabhupāda: So why your cloth is so dirty?

Pṛthu-putra: I just traveled with him.

Prabhupāda: For a sannyāsī it is very nice. So people may not dislike it, but for a sannyāsī this is very nice.

Bhagavān: He's doing very nicely, Pṛthu-putra. He's having many preaching engagements.

Prabhupāda: Very good. That is wanted. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam amalaṁ purāṇam. So when the whole lot will be delivered?

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Jayatīrtha: In France especially they will appreciate it, so ornate.

Prabhupāda: Same size?

Bhagavān: Same size, same thickness, all the same as the Gītā. It's a whole library of books.

Hari-śauri: You doing a color scheme on the different color for each canto?

Bhagavān: Maybe not, maybe keep the same.

Prabhupāda: There will be three parts or two?

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Bhagavān: There is one boy, one of our sankīrtana devotees, who previously was a farmer. His father has given him a farm in the north of France. So recently he has given us his whole crop of hay for the cows. The value of that was thirty thousand dollars. It's enough hay to supply twenty-five or thirty cows for two years, and on top of that he's able to get a loan from the bank of forty-five thousand dollars for twenty years at four percent.

Prabhupāda: To be repaid.

Bhagavān: Yes. But this he can use to purchase cows and build barn.

Prabhupāda: Only four percent. How their bank is giving so cheap?

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Jayatīrtha: Because no one wants to farm anymore these days. I heard that, especially in France.

Pṛthu-putra: Yes, especially in France.

Bhagavān: We have also paid our loan to Los Angeles. One month ago I paid seventeen thousand dollars.

Prabhupāda: So you, you can take back loan.

Bhagavān: I was holding it for him, but then he said he didn't need it right away, so I sent it to Los Angeles.

Jayatīrtha: We hadn't determined what building.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: They have done?

Bhagavān: In France there was a big drought, terrible drought. Many animals died. So the president of the country made a speech, and all he could say in his speech was that people should try to use less water. (laughter)

Prabhupāda: Oh. There was another caricature, India. So there was some drought, the same. So there was some, what is called, representation: "And there is no water. We are suffering. This is the difficulty." "Yes, we are taking step, but next week you'll have television." Advancement, television. Because there was no television, so this is the advancement. Next week they have television. As if television will solve the problem. All mūḍhas, rascals, are very horrible condition. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. There is no other.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Hari-śauri: It's not just that. It's the problem that you have to fly from France to somewhere else and then from somewhere else back to India. I said the main problem is that if you do go to France, then it means a great deal more traveling than would be involved in simply flying to India, because you'd have to travel back and forth to the Paris farm. Then you would also have to stay in Tehran, up and down like that in the plane, and then again fly to Bombay.

Bhagavān: But he doesn't have to stay in the farm for just nine days. He can stay there for long time.

Prabhupāda: If the health suits, I can stay there. If the health improves, I can stay.

Pṛthu-putra: Air India is direct from Geneva.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: No, I know.

Pṛthu-putra: France is the best place for mineral water.

Jayatīrtha: In France they have many very nice waters.

Prabhupāda: Mineral water.

Bhagavān: Prabhupāda knows. He used to sell Vichy water.

Prabhupāda: Vichy water. But I don't like. Bottled water I don't like.

Bhagavān: No, we have fresh water all the time. And you have hot water in bathroom.

Room Conversation -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: Śrīmad-bhāgavatam amalam purāṇam.

Harikeśa: These books are exquisite. The books they make in France are just marvelous.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Harikeśa: It was printed in Italy, I think, but this here is so nice.

Prabhupāda: Yes, embossed. I think our other books are not like that.

Harikeśa: Of course, in France this is very much appreciated because the people are like that.

Prabhupāda: Fancy.

Conversation with George Harrison -- July 26, 1976, London:

Prabhupāda: No, France.

Jayatīrtha: Yes, south of Paris. It's near a place called Valancey. Very nice place.

Pradyumna: French chateau.

Mukunda: It's on about 250 acres.

George Harrison: Really?

Mukunda: Huge fields, beautiful place. Show you a picture of it.

George Harrison: Yes. So that's one of the goals now, one hundred and eight temples.

Jayatīrtha: Should be able to do it this year, I think.

Prabhupāda: Eh?

Conversation with George Harrison -- July 26, 1976, London:

Jayatīrtha: They have six schools now, other than that. This place in France, they have a school there, this farm, and in Dallas, Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, Māyāpur.

Hari-śauri: Vṛndāvana Gurukula also was started.

George Harrison: There's all kinds of strange things written in those newspapers, Dallas, strange things. Particularly about the little children's school.

Hari-śauri: It's because they don't bother to find out before they write things.

Gurudāsa: Just like they said that the children sleep in the basement. That's because it was in the hot summer. Everyone goes to the basement in the summer in Dallas.

Mukunda: The kids don't feel any difficulty at all sleeping on the floor. Children are naturally austere. It's just after you get to a certain age that conditioning affects you.

Devotee: They say they live without furniture. (laughter)

Gurudāsa: They're prejudiced about those things.

Jayatīrtha: They have to eat with their hands. (laughter)

Prabhupāda: You have got the last copy of Seventh Canto?

Arrival at Farm -- July 29, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: Hare Kṛṣṇa. It was the prediction of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu that in every village, in every town on the surface of the globe, there will be preaching of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's name and the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. It is to be translated? (translator translates into French) So by your transcendental endeavor it is being fulfilled, otherwise who expected that in this remote village of France, Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra would be chanted? When Caitanya Mahāprabhu said in every village, in every town, he did not mean that every village and every town in India. He specifically says pṛthivīte, means on the surface of the globe. So the purpose is that without spreading of this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, nobody can become happy. That's a fact. The opportunity of human form of life is systematcially being refused by the modern civilization. This material activity only for the bodily comforts of life, that is not human civilization.

Morning Walk Around Grounds -- August 2, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Bhagavān: ...built a big factory here to engage people who were socially misfit, and he was making all kinds of plastic toys. So when we moved in we suggested that he help manufacture Spiritual Sky. So now almost his whole factory is being used. Many young Indian boys who have come to France looking for something, they had no money. So he has employed them here. So they're working, they've brought their families.

Prabhupāda: They're established.

Bhagavān: Yes, and he's building them houses. (breaks)

Prabhupāda: I think it's unusual in Europe.

Morning Walk Around Grounds -- August 2, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Bhagavān: It's like this every July and August, very sunny. During these months most people in Europe come to France. (break) ...storage house.

Prabhupāda: What does he manufacture?

Bhagavān: Manufactures boats and plastic things.

Prabhupāda: What is box?

Devotee (2): Spiritual Sky, incense boxes.

Bhagavān: It's a quarry for stone. The same kind of stone that the chateau is built from.

Prabhupāda: Oh.

Morning Walk Around Grounds -- August 2, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: Where you are selling?

Devotee (3): Everywhere in France. We're doing now also Germany and also Holland and Belgium.

Prabhupāda: Where it is printed?

Hari-śauri: These are all from the U.S. I think.

Devotee (3): No, it's from France. We started a few months ago. Everything now is organized in France.

Prabhupāda: These are all essential oils?

Morning Walk Around Grounds -- August 2, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: Where you get?

Devotee (3): This is coming from India I think. But there's much acacia in France, and so we're going to pick it ourselves. This will make us a producer, which will increase our profit.

Bhagavān: Spiritual Sky is paying right now almost eighty thousand dollars a year to the association here.

Prabhupāda: Very good.

Devotee (3): This is..., we're doing a cheaper line called Scented Garden, and the more expensive, this is for the cheaper customers.

Prabhupāda: This is scent?

Room Conversation -- August 3, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: That is not wanted. That anyone, if he has got some inclination, he can do it personally. There is no harm. General training is that he must be a devotee, a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa. That should be introduced. Otherwise, the gurukula will be... Otherwise Jyotirmayī was suggesting the biology. What they'll do with biology? Don't introduce unnecessary nonsense things. Simple life. Simply to understand Kṛṣṇa. Simply let them be convinced that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, it is our duty to serve Him, that's all. Huh? (indistinct) What is that? māyār bośe, jāccho bhese' Khāccho hābuḍubu bhāi jīv kṛṣṇa-dās ei biśwās korle to ār duḥkho nāi. So organize. If you have got sufficient place, sufficient scope, let them be trained up very nicely. If some four, five centers like this there are in Europe, the whole face will be changed. Important places like Germany, France, England. Now we are getting place. I like that place, German, on account of this. It has got scope.

Room Conversation -- August 3, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: Wherefrom they came?

Bhagavān: South of France.

Prabhupāda: South of France.

Hari-śauri: If we had a big farm in the south it would be very nice. In the south of France the weather is always very good.

Prabhupāda: South of France is near Mediterranean. Marseilles is south?

Bhagavān: Marseilles is right on the Mediterranean. We have very big saṅkīrtana there.

Prabhupāda: Marseilles? Oh.

Room Conversation -- August 4, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Harikeśa: The tickets are being locked up in the safe right now. They're going to..., they're going to bring the tickets tomorrow to this city called Tours, which is very nearby. They have an Air France office, and we can have it converted(?) there. So everything's all right for Saturday.

Prabhupāda: So we shall go by the same plane?

Harikeśa: Yes, everybody goes in the same plane.

Prabhupāda: That's all right.

Jayatīrtha: Jaya (break)

Hari-śauri: This is the first pamphlet that you ever printed?

Prabhupāda: No.

Room Conversation with Professor Francois Chenique -- August 5, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: You have to leave, you cannot stay. You do not want to leave, that's a fact, but you'll be kicked out. When Napoleon fought for France, he did not like to leave, but he was kicked out. I have seen in one park, there is a Napoleon Bonaparte there, France and Napoleon identified. But France is there, Napoleon is kicked out. (laughter)

Bhūgarbha: He's asking that in view of that, is it possible to live a household life and at the same time a spiritual life?

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes. Arjuna, Arjuna is a householder, he's a military man, but the greatest devotee of Kṛṣṇa.

Room Conversation with Professor Francois Chenique -- August 5, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Professor Chenique: I was, up to recent time, I was commenting Bhagavad-gītā in the camping. For eleven years every summer I am commenting the Gītā in the camping. I commend very warmly this edition of the Bhagavad-gītā. I think it's the best that you may find in France. But when I'm reading the commentary for my students, I find some sentences which are not good French. I think because it is not a very good style, and I hope it won't be that matter with... (French)

Bhūgarbha: Perhaps Professor Chenique could go over our translations and make any suggestions.

Prabhupāda: I have no objection.

Room Conversation with Professor Francois Chenique -- August 5, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Prabhupāda: The idea is, suppose I am in France. I do not know French language, but there is fire in my room, and I have to call my neighbors. So somehow or other I call and take their help. (laughter)

Yogeśvara: Professor Chenique wishes to know whether we cannot do one very small pocketbook edition that will sell very inexpensively. Something like I think in India they have done.

Hari-śauri: Like the abridged version in America they did?

Yogeśvara: No, something like this, very small.

Prabhupāda: I have no objection. It is nice proposal.

Room Conversation with Professor Francois Chenique -- August 5, 1976, New Mayapur (French farm):

Bhūgarbha: He said that he feels very thankful that you've given him such a long darśana. He's very happy that you've given so much enlightenment in many subjects. He's just passing through with his daughter. He'd like to stay tomorrow to see the installation of the Deities, but he has to go to a Tibetan temple in the south of France. On Saturday he has to be there, so he has to drive, and he said that he's found the Tibetans are also very good devotees.

Prabhupāda: Very good. Jaya. (end)

Arrival Conversation -- August 13, 1976, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: All, no cloud.

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: In France I read in the paper that the river was the lowest... (break)

Prabhupāda: ...premse kaho śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya-prabhu-nityānanda (prema-dhvani etc.) Thank you very much.

Devotee: All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: So when you have come? Everything all right?

Hari-śauri: Hyderabad will be complete.

Prabhupāda: If there is any prasāda to distribute?

Evening Darsana -- August 14, 1976, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: ...fruits, flowers, also grains, milk sufficient. In one farm, Philadelphia, they are producing so much milk that they are selling $1500 per month. And they've arranged so nice, and big tank. And the pipes regularly as they do in dairy farm. When it is not working, only hot water is passing through the pipes to keep them clean. And one cow, the milk bag is so big. He gives 102 pounds daily. Similarly, in France also we have got farm. New Orleans, Philadelphia, West Virginia, we have got four or five.

Kartikeya Mahadevia: San Diego near Los Angeles.

Prabhupāda: Yes. And all of them are successful. This time I installed Kṛṣṇa-Balarāma Deity in France.

Kartikeya Mahadevia: Paris, near Paris.

Prabhupāda: Yes. Near Orleans.

Room Conversation -- August 20, 1976, Hyderabad:

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: In France.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Gargamuni: Which place? Outside? The farm?

Prabhupāda: Very nice.

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: Exactly like Vṛndāvana, I heard. The Deities are exactly...

Prabhupāda: Nitāi-Gaura and Balarāma. Brajendra-nandana jei kṛṣṇa, śaci-suta haila sei: "He is now Śacī-suta." Balarāma haila nitāi: "And Balarāma has become Nitāi." That's all. These two brothers. And devotees are very nice. So if our devotees remain... Two hundred devotees there are. And they are taking prasāda on the open lawn. Very nice. Presently they are growing vegetables sufficient for their consumption and for the Paris temple. Fresh, nice vegetables. Flowers, grains also they have got. Barley and wheat. Milk also. Their own cows.

Morning Walk Conversation About Bombay -- August 29, 1976, Delhi:

Prabhupāda: All right.

Indian man: These children, they are coming from which place?

Hari-śauri: France and...

Prabhupāda: The smaller one from France and the bigger one from America. International.

Indian man: And their parents also there.

Prabhupāda: They are also here. We are a society, so the gṛhasthas are there, brahmacārīs, sannyāsīs, vānaprastha. All status of life. Missionaries, they have got only sannyāsīs. We have got all.

Room Conversation on New York court case -- November 2, 1976, Vrindaban:

Prabhupāda: Calais in France. So from France to other side English Channel, London, that's all right.

Guest: Artillery guns?

Prabhupāda: Yes, they... Hitler invented. The gun will be fired from this side.

Hari-śauri: Big, huge gun.

Prabhupāda: Yes. So this gun is required not for killing a mosquito. (laughter) Big enemy. So they are preparing this big gun and not the mosquito and this Mahesh Yogi and this yogi. You see. They are mosquitoes. For them they don't require any gun. So for big enemy, big gun, you see. They are preparing big gun, that means Hare Kṛṣṇa movement is big enemy. It is not mosquito. So you remain a big enemy, you don't become a mosquito. That is wanted. Immediately arrange this meeting here. Call all the Vaiṣṇavas, all. (Hindi to end)

Room Conversation on Farm Management -- December 10, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes, why not? Everywhere. I myself when I go to the farm, I forget whether it is India, or Germany, or France. I forget. The land is there. Sarva-kāma-dughā. We get everything from that. I have several times said that why they make this distinction? This is France, this is India, this is... Everywhere is God's land. Why these rascals make division, I do not understand. Every land belongs to Kṛṣṇa, and you are sons of Kṛṣṇa. Let us live peacefully and chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. All rascals, mūḍha. There is rain now and then fall in Europe?

Harikeśa: Yes, now it's very much.

Haṁsadūta: Now it's too late.

Prabhupāda: Hm?

Room Conversation on Farm Management -- December 10, 1976, Hyderabad:

Prabhupāda: Hm. But God is giving hint that if, "Rascal, it is in My hand. I can keep you in starvation to death." The man is dull brain. Anyway, I am anxious to learn, why so many people are suffering? They have become all gray. Throughout whole France I saw. From Paris to Valencay I went. Gray. These people are not lazy, but there was no water. They utilize every inch land for agricultural purpose. At least I saw in France. Then maybe everywhere in Europe. They are not lazy fellow. There is organization, government organization here. People, they... Anyway let us show some example. Immediately make program. You have seen, yes?

Devotee: Yes.

Prabhupāda: And you are expert. Do it immediately. If there is requires some money, we shall pay. Fill up. What is the difficulty in filling up this tank?

1977 Conversations and Morning Walks

Room Conversation -- January 3, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: Jaya. (break) Where is this temple? London? No.

Hari-śauri: Which one? Oh, that's the German castle. Schloss Rettershof.

Prabhupāda: Oh, France.

Hari-śauri: German.

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes, yes. I think it is rightly done.

Hari-śauri: For mass distribution it's very good, for mass distribution. How many copies he's...

Prabhupāda: One lakh. (end)

Room Conversation -- January 24, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Gurukṛpa: Interplanetary.

Hari-śauri: These are appreciations from all over the world, France...

Guest (1): Pradyumna Mahārāja put some pertinent questions on Bhāgavata when he came to know that I am Sanskrit scholar. (break)

Prabhupāda: ...Leyland.

Gargamuni: Yes, Leyland(?) Bank.

Prabhupāda: Yes. "Our Guru Mahārāja went to America with this hope—that Indian culture and American money combined together will save the world." That's a fact. Everything requires money, but we are securing money with hard labor. If money little easily comes, we can make very nice program.

Room Conversation -- January 29, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Satsvarūpa: In France, too. In France they don't speak English.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Satsvarūpa: They don't want to.

Prabhupāda: Yes. There is agitation in Canada.

Satsvarūpa: Yes, Quebec.

Prabhupāda: Just like here it happened, Hindi and English. That enviousness is always there. I have seen in Montreal. All the officers, they are speaking in French. They won't talk in English. Airport. Purposefully. And there was fight, regular fight between these French speaking and English speaking, riot. People are so foolish. So it is bilingual. In everything, English and French. If you put one notice, it must be in English and French, as here (chuckling) they in the provincial language, Oriya, and Hindi, state language, and English for outsiders-three languages. You'll see in the railway station the local language and the Hindi language and English.

Room Conversation -- January 31, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Satsvarūpa: Yes. (break) Mainly it's about the girls who are over ten. They were in Vṛndāvana and discussed this with Jagadīśa, but they couldn't settle up, so they wanted to know what you think. Their idea is that... As of now, there is no plan for a school for the girls over ten, but just that they should return to their parents and not get any more schooling. But they're thinking that there should be, and one reason is that you said in France that the girls could learn these sixty-four arts. So they were thinking that there should be a school for girls over ten, and that it should be situated in India. One reason is that in India our teachers can take help from Indian Life Member ladies who know these arts. Our Western devotees don't know them, the cooking and painting and things like this, but the Indian women do. And also they were saying that this age is very delicate for the girls. They're starting to be attracted to boys, and India is better than being in the West where the material attraction is very strong for the girls as well as the boys. So they're wondering whether this principle is good, that there be a school for girls over ten in India. Right now there are only twelve such girls in the movement, a dozen girls that age, just a little over ten years old. They thought that they should have just one teacher for every three girls so they'd be closely supervised.

Prabhupāda: Every three girls?

Room Conversation -- January 31, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: ...not married. Better if she would have been married. So there is no candidate for marrying her?

Yogeśvara: Not in France. At one point she was expressing the desire to receive some training, and she even mentioned Los Angeles. But any center where she could receive training would be helpful. She's enthusiastic, but...

Prabhupāda: Yes. I know that she's enthusiastic.

Yogeśvara: She had... (break)

Room Conversation -- January 31, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: Where?

Yogeśvara: To France via Bangkok.

Prabhupāda: Oh.

Yogeśvara: We just came to make the report to you, and we were in Vṛndāvana.

Prabhupāda: So you will not stay here up to...? No.

Hari-śauri: Festival?

Yogeśvara: There is work for us, service waiting in France.

Prabhupāda: So what is the report in France? Paris atmosphere is all right?

Room Conversation -- January 31, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: That is the... That is in the via media. The real trouble is there—janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi. Now if you can make change... Suppose you are now a dog. You can become a man. But that is not solution. Or you are man; you can become a demigod. Karma. But that does not make solution! Either you become demigod or man or dog or cat or insect, you must have these tribulations, janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi (BG 13.9). That is God's challenge. You first of all make solution. But you are eternal. Why you are in this condition? Na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre (BG 2.20). You... That means you are eternally suffering, punaḥ punaś carvita-carvaṇānām (SB 7.5.30), simply changing the position. But suffering's there. So you are taking credit by little change of the position. And that is your foolishness. And God challenges you, "You make solution of these things." Why little change? Suppose I am... I have got so many centers. Sometimes I live in the palace, other times a cottage. So this is change of position. But I am the same man. So whatever comfort or discomfort is there in that you France palace, the same comfort and discomfort is in this cottage. But if I think, "Now I am in the France palace, or Bhaktivedanta Manor palace. I am happy," that is foolishness.

Room Conversation -- February 3, 1977, Bhuvanesvara:

Prabhupāda: There are many. Means they don't want anything genuine. Something imitation. What is the cause of fighting, this Ireland? Unnecessarily. It is going on in Europe since long time. In France it was very terrible fight. I have seen that Church. They would bell, and they'll come and fight Protestant. You have been there? No. Concord. It is... That place is called Concord. So history there is a building, church. The Catholics would come and kill the Protestants. The Joan of Arc.

Hari-śauri: She was burnt.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Evening Darsana -- February 15, 1977, Mayapura:

Brahmānanda: London, France, Australia, South America.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Canada, Australia. The problem is that... Actually it's a fact that many of these groups are bad. They're cheating. Of course, ours is not, but because they're not very intelligent, they cannot see the distinction. Probably as a result of this court case, we will make them aware that now the other groups are bogus but we are not. That they'll have to admit. That will be the effect. But at least up until now we are being lumped in with these other bad groups. Cults, they call them. But it's a very dangerous thing. Therefore the lawyers and all of the scholars and intelligentsia of the United States is very alarmed that this is a great treading on human rights. This is a great danger to human rights because the Fifth Amendment of the... The First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees the freedom of religion. But according to these laws that they want to pass, a parent can say, "It is not a question of religion. My son has become abnormal." So who is to say what is religion and what is abnormal? They are saying, "This is not religion." So we have to prove, "No, this is... Hare Kṛṣṇa is a religion." Otherwise they are saying this is abnormal. Now, just... Our lawyer has pointed out that if you say that the devotees' preaching is brainwash, then you must say that every single Christian priest who preaches, he is also brainwashing.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Evening Darsana -- February 15, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: And many foreign scholars also, they have. In France... In France one professor has said, "The..."

Satsvarūpa: Chenique?

Prabhupāda: "...Aurobindo and Dr. Radhakrishnan, they have compromised with the Western idea, but here is the real tradition of India." Actually that's a fact. All of them, they have tried to make a hodgepodge. And from the beginning my idea was I shall present as it is. That's all. Therefore I gave this name, "As It Is." Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, yāre dekha tāre kaha 'kṛṣṇa'-upadeśa (CC Madhya 7.128). Why shall I manufacture idea? Present this as it is. All right. Let us do our duty. (devotees offer obeisances) (break) So at any cost, I am still dictating. I'll go on dictating so long I live. That's all. But this is very nice program, our farm program. practical. So if possible, Paramānanda may come and teach them.

Room Conversation with Adi-kesava Swami -- February 19, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: And in France it is very... In France you have got.

Pṛthu-putra: In France, yes. All the prostitution going on around the temple.

Ādi-keśava: You see even old, old men going to these clubs.

Hari-śauri: If you can still have sex when you're seventy-five, then you're a great man. Glorified.

Prabhupāda: Just see. This is their civilization. In Paris there are so many clubs. The old men, they first of all pay fifty dollars to enter into the club. Then he selects which vagina he will lick up. Then another payment. I know that. (aside:) No, he can be asked to sit down there.

Evening Darsana -- February 25, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Increase more temples. Pṛthivīte āche yata nagarādi grāma. (CB Antya-khaṇḍa 4.126) As many towns, as many villages. At least as many towns, and then push through the villages. What is your news about our palace in France? I am asking you, Bhūgarbha.

Bhūgarbha: Chateau palace in France?

Prabhupāda: Huh? Yes. Is it going nice?

Bhūgarbha: It is going on. I haven't been to the palace.

Prabhupāda: Oh.

Bhūgarbha: I go to the Paris temple.

Prabhupāda: So it is very nice temple.

Room Conversation -- February 28, 1977, Mayapura:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: ...the letterhead now for you from France, really nice.

Hari-śauri: Prabhupāda's seen it.

Prabhupāda: Where it is?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Can I show you a copy?

Prabhupāda: Some letterhead is already there, nice.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: This is from France.

Prabhupāda: That was also from France.

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: Why?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Hṛdayānanda Mahārāja was just there in France. He just paid a visit, so he'd be... What is your report, Hṛdayānanda, about the French BBT?

Hṛdayānanda: Well, some of the important members have left.

Prabhupāda: Why they have left?

Hṛdayānanda: Well, they were dissatisfied with Bhagavān.

Prabhupāda: That should be rectified. They are important members. They are translating.

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Kīrtanānanda: He said that he did not like... He'd like to start something new then. If he wasn't going to be in France, he wanted to start something new. So he said, "Well, let me go to Israel."

Rāmeśvara: Mid-East.

Prabhupāda: Middle East.

Kīrtanānanda: Specially he said Israel. And if you work in Israel, you can't work anywhere else.

Hṛdayānanda: He wanted to work in the Mid-East.

Prabhupāda: And do you think that is all right?

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Kīrtanānanda: We felt he was too important a man to put there. So then we said, "Well, better that you stay in France if you're that determined..."

Rāmeśvara: "...to avoid America."

Kīrtanānanda: We really wanted him to come to the United States and help there.

Hṛdayānanda: But he was discouraged by that idea.

Kīrtanānanda: He said he could not get enthusiastic about that.

Prabhupāda: But to remain in France, if you think it is all right, that is another thing. But you said that he requires little change, you all GBC. What...?

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: But to remain in France, if you think it is all right, that is another thing. But you said that he requires little change, you all GBC. What...?

Hṛdayānanda: Yes. That was the general feeling, that it would be good for both, for him and for France.

Kīrtanānanda: But we did not feel that he had done anything seriously wrong that would require our forcing a change on him.

Satsvarūpa: He doesn't feel he needs a change. He said, "Everyone has some trouble in their zone."

Prabhupāda: Then try to rectify. Then...

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Satsvarūpa: No. What we resolved is that Bhagavān dāsa would stay in his present zone: France and Italy and Sweden and Amsterdam; but that as far as Jayatīrtha, he would visit Paris and New Māyāpur to assist with the financial problems there, and after some time...

Prabhupāda: Jayatīrtha and Ātreya Ṛṣi, both.

Satsvarūpa: Ātreya Ṛṣi would also go visit in June to try and help with the financial problems. And then...

Prabhupāda: What is the actual financial problem?

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Bhagavān: There was just a little cash flow since last Māyāpur. We spent a lot of money coming here. And this year a lot of saṅkīrtana devotees were ill.

Prabhupāda: Lot of money coming here from France? How is that?

Gargamuni: On transportation. Air flight.

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: And also no one collected. He's improving that also.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: One problem is that to this date they have to separate the BBT account from the temple accounts. They are not yet separate, so that...

Bhagavān: It is separate.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I was informed that they weren't.

Devotee: No, theirs is separate now.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I don't know who to believe.

Room Conversation 'GBC Resolutions' -- March 1, 1977, Mayapura:

Prabhupāda: So anyway, printing and translation must continue. That is our main business. It cannot be stopped. Must go on. Just like persisting, now we have got so many Hindi literature. (laughs) I was simply persisting, "Where is Hindi? Where is Hindi?" So it has come to some tangible form. And I was simply poking him: "Where is Hindi? Where is Hindi?" So he has brought into fact. Similarly for French language also, very important, we must translate and bring books, as many as possible. "Bring books" means we have got already book. Simply translate it in the particular language and publish it. That's all. Idea is already there. You haven't got to manufacture idea. So France is very important country. So printing and translation must go on. That is my request. Then?

Morning Conversation -- April 11, 1977, Bombay:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: BBT, yes. They had a meeting in Māyāpur discussing some common points of interest and concerns. It says, "We will anxiously be awaiting a report on Śrīla Prabhupāda's reaction to the various points, and it would be good if you sent copies to all the trustees directly if there are any urgent points. I am going to L.A. in a few weeks, at which time I will make it my business, as one of the US trustees, to look into the Press matter. I will send a report after doing so. I also share your concern in this matter. I am going to France in a few days and will send a report on my findings. I am especially concerned to see that BBT be set up along standard lines. I have heard that Śrīla Prabhupāda's health has improved somewhat. Please be so kind as to send reports on this from time to time, as all the devotees are very much concerned. We are all praying to Lord Nṛsiṁha-deva that His Divine Grace's health will be completely restored. I remain your servant, Jayatīrtha dāsa. P.S. I will be visiting Africa in May." This letter is dated 25th March.

Prabhupāda: March?

Morning Talk -- April 18, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: No, their position, economic position, is also better than France, England. I have seen it. Even in the villages they are well-to-do. They have recouped all they have lost.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Oh, yeah. Belgium, you go through Belgium, it's still devastated. And Germany is completely built up.

Prabhupāda: Oh, yes. I think in... For culture, France, and for improvement, economic development, they have done in Germany.

Meeting with Mr. Dwivedi -- April 23, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: Yes...

Mr. Dwivedi: We are selling a few copies to America, to France, to England also.

Prabhupāda: So... No, if you so desire, you can stay here. We have got accommodation, fooding, everything.

Mr. Dwivedi: (Hindi) Because I have to do work in the night.

Prabhupāda: All right.

Mr. Dwivedi: So to correspond, I have got...

Prabhupāda: All right. So...

Morning Conversation -- April 23, 1977, Bombay:

Prabhupāda: Hm.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Previous centuries. The Spanish also, Spanish and Portugal, Portuguese. And Dutch. They were also active. But British was the topmost. France, not so much, I think. Spanish did quite well.

Prabhupāda: India was discovered by the Portugal, Portuguese, Vasco de Gama. Pondicherry is Portuguese colony. Goa. Goa.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Pondicherry?

Prabhupāda: Goa.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Goa. Pondicherry is in Goa?

Prabhupāda: No, near Goa.

Evening Darsana -- May 12, 1977, Hrishikesh:

Prabhupāda: Then why you ask me? We have got in every country of Europe-England, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Rome, Sweden, everywhere.

German man: But the Pope is agreeing with you in Rome?

Prabhupāda: Eh?

German man: The Pope is agreeing?

Devotee (2): The Pope.

Prabhupāda: Pope.

German man: In Rome. He is agreeing with Hare Kṛṣṇa...?

Prabhupāda: But he agree or... Who cares for his agreement?

Morning Conversation -- May 29, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: Very, very nice. Better than our France palace.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: There's 1400 ounces gold in the ceilings.

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Rāmeśvara: Even in the bathroom...

Prabhupāda: Yes.

Rāmeśvara: There's gold on the ceiling.

Prabhupāda: All very aristocratic, very aristocratic. What is aristocracy, that is displayed there.

Room Conversation -- June 17, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: I thought all this. I went to USA not to come back. I left here hopeless. I did not want to come back. I went with determination that "If I do this job, I will survive." So Kṛṣṇa helped me. I never desired to come back. It was 197... Er, no, 1968. You all helped, so I called you: "I want to return back. There are so many secretaries."

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah, you called me from France.

Prabhupāda: London.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I was in Paris.

Prabhupāda: Yes, and you were Paris.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Yeah.

Prabhupāda: That "I want to go back. There is some conspiracy. Don't want."

Room Conversation -- July 19, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Here's a... This is a thing called the "Bhakta Program Newsletter." Just like you have a saṅkīrtana newsletter, this one reports how many new devotees are joining. So the top temple in the world for making new devotees last month was Rome. Second was the Bhaktivedanta Manor. That's where you're going next. Then Sao Paulo, Brazil; then Honolulu, Hawaii; then France, and like that. (temple bells ring)

Prabhupāda: Jaya Kṛṣṇa-Balarāma!

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: Then another letter came from... This is becoming more and more prevalent. It's called the "Parents' Newsletter."

Prabhupāda: Oh.

Room Conversation -- August 8, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: If you have got distribution problem, then you...

Gopāla Kṛṣṇa: And we have a lot of small books which we have just printed. So I wanted the small books to be cleared out. Like in Germany and France also they don't do Back to Godhead every month. They do it every few months so that they can get the books out.

Prabhupāda: It doesn't matter. Every month, if we regularly publish, we get some postal (indistinct). That's... If you every month publish some in certain date, you get very cheap rate for posting. That... All right. So a good thing... (break) Very good boy. So Gaurasundara, if he joins there, it will be still more brilliant for both of them. Because you have got the talent. You are not to be taught. You can teach others how to make dolls. And profusely make this doll exhibition from Bhāgavata. Yes. There's no need of reading book.

Room Conversation -- August 8, 1977, Vrndavana:

Prabhupāda: No, the palace.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: France. Germany.

Prabhupāda: No.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You have so many palaces we don't know which one you mean. Oh, Detroit.

Prabhupāda: Hm.

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: That's a good place for it, Detroit. They're planning a big one in Washington, D.C.

Prabhupāda: Do it first. In Hawaii the Deities are made of paper combination?

Room Conversation -- October 14, 1977, Vrndavana:

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I think we'll give you another report later on. It's successful. That's a fact. Only these are suggestions how it can be improved. We'll speak with Svarūpa Dāmodara about it. (break) ...from the devotees in France, Bhagavān's zone. In fact, it's a four-page telegram. Should I read it? It says, "Dear Śrīla Prabhupāda, please accept our most humble obeisances at your lotus feet. Knowing how dear your book distribution is to you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, the devotees in France would like to humbly offer you the results of our week-long marathon saṅkīrtana, hoping in some way to please you." Śrīla Prabhupāda? The devotees there, they went out on book distribution for twelve hours every day. All the devotees. They went out every day for seven days in a row, for twelve hours each day. And here is the results of their distribution. This is only for this one temple in France. It says, "We have distributed 25,061 hard-cover Bhagavad-gītās in one week." Twenty-five thousand, Śrīla Prabhupāda. We usually print of a Bhāgavatam 20,000 for the whole society. They distributed 25,000 Gītās in one week in French, Bhagavad-gītās in French. He says, "...to the conditioned souls of this country in seven days. We hope that these results are the biggest in the history of your movement and that they will give you some solace. Our top distributor were Bhakta Richard..." (laughter) Somebody who isn't initiated yet. "...who distributed 1,504 big books in one week." Every day he distributed over two hundred hard-cover books. That's pretty good. (laughter) That means he did about say 240 in twelve hours. He distributed about one book every three minutes for twelve hours in a row, Śrīla Prabhupāda, every day. "Jagad-vaśī dāsa, who distributed 1,125 big books; Ariṣṭa-nāśana dāsa, 864 books; Veśa-kīrti dāsa, 851 big books; Akhileśvara dāsa 835 big books; Kṛpā-siddha dāsa, 760 big books." Then they say, "Thank you for allowing us to assist you in preaching this message of Lord Caitanya in the Western countries. All glories to you, Śrīla Prabhupāda. Your humble servants, the devotees in France." Pretty big distribution. Bhagavān estimates that they collected over sixty thousand dollars in one week. It's amazing. Seems like Kṛṣṇa is giving unlimited facilities to spread His glories, Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Prabhupāda: Yes. We do not want liberation. We want to serve the purpose of the Gosvāmīs, in association with pure devotees. To stop birth and death is not our purpose. Tāṅdera caraṇa-sebi-bhakta-sane bās, janame janame hoy ei abhilāṣ. (break)
