Human opulence means the society must have enough gold, enough jewelry, enough silk, enough grains, enough milk, enough vegetables, like that. That is opulent. That is opulence. Formerly a person was considered rich by two things: dhānyena dhanavān. How much grain stock he has got at his home. A big, big barn, filled with grains. Still in India, if I am going to give my daughter to some family, to see the family's opulence, I go to see the house, and if I see there are many, many barns' stock of grains and many cows, then it is very good. It is opulent. Dhānyena dhanavān, gavyaṁ dhanavān. A man is considered to be rich when he has got enough quantity of grains, enough quantity of, I mean to say, number, enough number of cows. Just like Mahārāja, Nanda Mahārāja, the foster father of Kṛṣṇa. He was keeping 900,000 cows. And He was rich man. He was mahārāja, king. But see the behavior. His beloved son, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, he has entrusted to take care of the calves or cows: "Go in the forest."

"Please get out. Get out. Get out." Because some of the sannyāsīs, they have taken this dress as a means of livelihood. But still in the village, any sannyāsī—he may be a cheater, still he is welcome. In the cities, of course, in India, they are now doubtful, "Whether he is actually sannyāsī or to fill up his belly he has taken this dress?" So this is the formula. So very learned men, the... generally, the sannyāsī and brāhmaṇas, they should be worshiped, not the fools and rascals.
So mūrkhā yatra na pūjyante and dhānyaṁ yatra. Dhānyam means paddy, rice, well-stocked. Perhaps you have, in your country also what is called, barn? That, you keep...
Himāvatī: But isn't that natural, just like no one wants to keep an old bull in the barn?
Prabhupāda: Yes. These things are man-manufactured. Dharmāṁ tu sākṣād bhagavat-praṇītam (SB 6.3.19). Therefore we have to accept the words of Nārāyaṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is dharma.
Yamunā: Bhaktivinoda in one of his prayers prays that he may be born "as a worm in the home of Thy devotee, rather than be born a brāhmaṇa averse to Thee."
Prabhupāda: Yes? (break) So in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam every line is so interesting. Therefore vidyā bhāgavatāvadhiḥ: "Knowledge means up to the knowledge of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam." But generally people do not discuss Bhāgavatam in this way. They go immediately to the Tenth Canto and rāsa-līlā. You see? That is the subject matter of (chuckles) Bhāgavatam. And Bhagavat-saptāha means that Kṛṣṇa is kissing the gopīs. That's all. And there are so many nice instructions—that is not nothing. They have neglected because they do not like to hear such instructions. Kṛṣṇa's dealings with the gopīs, that is very much liked.

Satyabhāmā: The barn.
Prabhupāda: ...repair that barn immediately so you can... At least ten people can live there.
Satyabhāmā: If there were people here, then facilities could be built. But if there are no people...
Prabhupāda: You'll get everything, men and money both.
Hayagrīva: Have you any plans yet to go to England? Is anything definite?

Prabhupāda: How they can produce thousands of animals?
Ātreya Ṛṣi: They're producing animals in the laboratories, not with... They're not producing, they are utilizing nature's way, but they don't let the animals see the green and the grass or the outside. They keep them in the barn and just keep feeding them.
Prabhupāda: I don't think it is possible. It is simply imagination.
Ātreya Ṛṣi: It's the cows which are producing each other, it's not the man that is producing. But they artificially try to make them fat fast.
Prabhupāda: And what is the harm if they live?
Ātreya Ṛṣi: Excuse me, Prabhupāda?
Prabhupāda: There is enough grass.

Prabhupāda: Oh, that's very good. Winter?
Nityānanda: No snow, it's always rain. We can grow vegetables in the summer, and different vegetables in the winter. So the cows they can stay outside all year. They don't have to stay in the barn, it's warm enough.
Prabhupāda: Very ideal spot. Develop it and show how we can live peacefully.
Nityānanda: This combination of a temple in the city where they can preach and bring people out to their farm is very good.
Prabhupāda: ...healthy place.
Nityānanda: So mostly gṛhasthas should stay on the farms, or brahmacārīs also?
Prabhupāda: No, brahmacārīs and sannyāsīs especially they should preach. And gṛhasthas may produce necessities. They also preach, preaching everyone. Especially for brahmacārī and sannyāsī.
Prabhupāda: Milk. (laughter) That is meant for calves? Those milk?
Nityānanda: Yes.
Prabhupāda: What is this?
Nityānanda: The barn.
Prabhupāda: No, this part.
Nityānanda: Oh, that's the door. It fell off. These are orange trees here.
Prabhupāda: Oh. How long it will take to grow?
Nityānanda: Well, some down here already have a few oranges, but it will take a few years before they give a lot. They are very sweet kind. (break)
Prabhupāda: So small still. They are growing. (break)
Nityānanda: Here is the cows here. We can see them from here.
Prabhupāda: Yes.
Nityānanda: Inside the barn they are milking two at a time. And upstairs we keep all the hay.
Brahmānanda: You keep figures on how much each milk per cow every day?
Nityānanda: You hear it?
Prabhupāda: Yes. Then how the milk will be utilized?
Nityānanda: We make sweet rice and burfi, we take the cream to make butter and ghee, and all extra milk is made into curd. So it is all used. Thirty gallons a day.
Prabhupāda: One gallon means 6 pounds?
Nityānanda: Eight and a half.

Prabhupāda: (laughs) Yes. Anyone who is not taking urad ḍāl, he must be taking fish silently, secretly. (break)
Kīrtanānanda: Not on this side, other side. I want to buy that farm there.
Prabhupāda: This barn, Vṛndāvana. What is this building?
Kīrtanānanda: They are constructing a... I have a big carpenter shop, a construction shop, a printing shop. And upstairs there will be a big hall for Janmāṣṭamī that holds seven, eight hundred people. There is another, that's our guesthouse building we're building there. You can see the top two floors, with the arches.
Prabhupāda: What is this? Another barn?
Kīrtanānanda: This is an oxbarn here.
Prabhupāda: No, this.
Prabhupāda: To be repaid.
Bhagavān: Yes. But this he can use to purchase cows and build barn.
Prabhupāda: Only four percent. How their bank is giving so cheap?
Bhagavān: Because he's a farmer. They're helping...
Prabhupāda: Oh, farmers...
Jayatīrtha: Special concession for farmers to help farm.

Bhavānanda: I was very impressed with that farm when I visited it. Nicest. I saw one little kitten in the barn, and there was milk coming out of the cow's milkbag and it was falling into the kitten's mouth.
Prabhupāda: Dropping.
Bhavānanda: Yes.
Prabhupāda: Just see. Such an important animal. And then, when she passes stool and urine, that is also nice. The milk is nutritious, the stool is useful; the urine is useful. Why this poor animal should be slaughtered? What kind of civilization? Your material desires, eating, sleeping, mating-fulfill it like a gentleman and save time and make spiritual advancement. This is to be introduced. Why you are inventing so strenuous work and spoil time, valuable time of human life? This we want to preach. Save time, be spiritually advanced, and other necessities, make it gentlemanly short-cut. If you save time, you can read all these literatures, understand what is value of life. Therefore, the literature here.
Prabhupāda: Yes.
Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: "ISKCON farm report: Port Royal, Pennsylvania, report for year 1976. ISKCON Incorporated of New York owns a prime farm in Juanita County of Pennsylvania. The land is nearly four hundred acres in size, valued at around five hundred dollars per acre, or two hundred thousand dollars. In addition the buildings on the property consist of the following: barn worth $40,000; outbuildings worth $10,000; calf barn $25,000; equipment $50,000; residential building $45,000; guesthouse and public kitchen and prasāda pavilion $75,000; and silos $20,000. Total, including land, $465,000. The purpose of this land is to produce foodstuffs to meet all the needs of the farm community as well as the needs of our temples in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
