Real fame is to be known as a great devotee
Bhagavad-gita As It Is
BG Chapters 7 - 12
Yaśas, fame, should be according to Lord Caitanya, who said that a man is famous when he is known as a great devotee. That is real fame.
BG 10.4-5, Purport: Yaśas, fame, should be according to Lord Caitanya, who said that a man is famous when he is known as a great devotee. That is real fame. If one has become a great man in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and it is known, then he is truly famous. One who does not have such fame is infamous.
Srimad-Bhagavatam
SB Canto 4
When Lord Caitanya inquired from Rāmānanda Rāya about the most famous man in this world, the latter replied that anyone who is known as a great devotee of the Lord is to be accepted as the most famous.
SB 4.9.50, Purport: There are many heroes in the world, but there is no comparison to Dhruva Mahārāja, who was not only a heroic emperor of this planet, but also a great devotee. A devotee is also a great hero because he conquers the influence of māyā. When Lord Caitanya inquired from Rāmānanda Rāya about the most famous man in this world, the latter replied that anyone who is known as a great devotee of the Lord is to be accepted as the most famous.
Sri Caitanya-caritamrta
CC Madhya-lila
In this Age of Kali, the fame of one who is known as a great devotee is very rare.
CC Madhya 8.246, Purport: One may become famous as a brahma-jñānī, an impersonalist scholar, or one may become a materially opulent person. In either case, such reputations are inferior to the reputation of Kṛṣṇa’s devotee. In the Garuḍa Purāṇa it is said:
- kalau bhāgavataṁ nāma durlabhaṁ naiva labhyate
- brahma-rudra-padotkṛṣṭaṁ guruṇā kathitaṁ mama
Lectures
Srimad-Bhagavatam Lectures
Ramananda Raya answered, "He is the most famous man who is known as a great devotee of Kṛṣṇa."
Lecture on SB 4.14.14 -- November 16, 1971, Delhi: So the point is that a devotee, even he does not know, does not want advertisement, Kṛṣṇa advertises him. Kṛṣṇa advertises him without his intention. Kṛṣṇa wants to see that his devotee is very much advertised as a devotee. Therefore, when Caitanya Mahāprabhu was talking with Rāmānanda Rāya that "Who is the most famous man?" Caitanya Mahāprabhu inquired, asked this question from Rāmānanda Rāya. He answered, "He is the most famous man who is known as a great devotee of Kṛṣṇa. He is the most famous man."
Correspondence
1968 Correspondence
According to Caitanya Caritamrta, a man is famous who is known as a great devotee of Krishna.
Letter to Jadurani -- San Francisco 13 April, 1968: Our time is very short. We have to finish our Krishna Consciousness during our lifetime, and we should not waste a single moment for anything else. According to Caitanya Caritamrta, a man is famous who is known as a great devotee of Krishna. So if there is not possibility of selling our pictures immediately on presentation, I do not think there is any necessity to improve our artistic craftsmanship. We should be satisfied with our pictures hanging in our different temples. But we may not sacrifice our valuable time for becoming famous artists so that pictures may be sold like hotcakes.
